Just got a call that a good friend of mine visiting from out of town has come up missing since 2PM Friday. He was last seen on a SUP on the river near the hook. Apparently police, fire, and USCG are searching the river.
Very worried.

Here is a photo of the missing paddler with his girlfriend.
He is still missing. His board and life jacket were found adrift at the Event Site later yesterday, and he was last seen sitting on the board resting.

If you have any information, please contact the HR police department or the HR Sheriffs dept.

Apparently his life jacket was tied off to the SUP like he took it off to go for a swim.

I received a call from the sheriff this morning. Paul is still missing. Here is the email they asked me to post:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Paul was last seen on a stand up paddle board Friday July 3rd at noon at the Hook in calm windless waters. His paddle board was found floating down river near the Event Site.

Paul is 5'4" - 5'5", tan, fit, dark hair (slightly thinning hair...), brown eyes. He was wearing a black nylon baseball hat, sunglasses with red croakies, no shirt, white board shorts with big blue flowers (old navy). The shorts had an faded orange whistle and keys in the pockets.

The Sheriff and his crew have been in search with boats and a plane. Please help us by keeping an eye out for him if you're out there!!

If you see, or know something - anything - please call the county sheriff's office 24 hour number at 541-386-2711

Again, thank you so much for the added effort. Please feel free to reach out to me with any comments or questions. My contact information is listed below.

I just have a quick question. First if he fell off of the board at the hook how would his board have made it to the event site as the event site is up river not down river of the hook. I hope they find him soon but sounds like they could be looking in the wrong place??

If there was any wind it would push the board up river.

Any word on Paul?

That's what's odd here... the paddle and pfd were secured to the SUP intentionally. Paul must have gone for a swim to cool off after he wisely tied off the gear. I hope this turns out OK.

What Im trying to say is that if he got off at the hook the board would have gone downriver towards the hatch. The board was found at the event site, the event site is not down river of the hook, its downwind. This means he should have gotten off the board up river towards the marina.

From what I have seen the PFDs have to be secured to the paddle board because they are considered a water craft. He could have never had the vest on, and been sitting on the board resting maybe??

I am not trying to argue about this because its super serious, im just pointing out some observations that I noticed. It just seems a little inaccurate coming from the police.

Pauls picture is very familiar i know I have seen his face around town before, I am hoping for the best.

For what it's worth, I was in an anchored boat just upstream of Wells Island on a windless day, and the current was toward the east, so there is/was and eddie in that vicinity.

my 2 cents for what its worth..

im thinking he was never wearing the life jacket because it was hot, not cool, whatever.. It was probably strapped to the board the whole time..
If the paddle was strapped to the board, well, something was wrong, ie, an unrelated health issue...
If the paddle was floating free, I am imagining him falling and hitting his head. I saw a newb SUP-er in baja have an ugly fall, with the arms flailing, then kicking out the legs to land head first in the water. I remember thinkin if he'd hit his head how ugly it could have been..
I think helmets are the call even in flat water, and least for newbs/ rentals... and full deck pads are great, too

Update from the Sheriff:

The search is still on in full force. Please keep your eyes open.

Thanks

Man that sucks big time. At this point I have to believe that it is a body recovery mission. I was thinking either head injury or heart attack.
