The reports seem all messed up or maybe just KGW.

Yep, kgw missreported the location. Viento is about 4 milels west of Wells Island. Last night and today, the search plane and boats were hanging near wells island and the event site.

That area west of wells all the way past the hatchery has numerous of hidden tree truncks that are covered now with the Dams, that area has always been scary, since the early eighties! Always nice smooth water in heavy wind, but dangerous as hell with a head first dive.

And there is definately an Eddy there, just as different places in the gorge. The sandbar exists due to that Eddy caused by the Hood River.

My cousin is paralysed from a tree trunk in Lake Tahoe, this is very unfortunate. I can only hope for the best.

man... I feel really bad for his girlfriend who was traveling with him.

As an avid SUP-per... i'm rethinking safety. I had already started wearing a helmet while surfing, but have let kids on my board around docks and such...

Quite honestly I think it is premature to talk about any kind of safety issues yet. I don't think anyone knows yet what actually happened to him. If he had a heart attack it could happen to anyone at any time, while out swimming or kiting, and obviously then the helmet means nothing.

I have a hard time thinking that even falling and smacking your head on a board would knock you out. Either way, there is just so much risk in this world that you can regulate and worry about. I don't think anyone on this forum would really think heading out to do some SUP'ing on a sunny afternoon would be very risky.

Very sad. We all had so much fun hanging with Paul, I was very much looking forward to seeing him again this Summer in the Gorge.
Last night at a memorail service held at Crissy (simulcast with the Event Site), up to 1,000 friends showed up. Close knit community....
see image below, friends rigged sails to bid farewell.

What a tragedy. More condolences to his family and friends.
Go hug someone you love and tell them what they mean to you....
