Alright coast is looking really good for end of June. 9ft swell tomorrow subsiding to 7ft and 10ft swell on Sunday. Probably gonna hit it tomorrow (Friday) and again Sunday if I can. If anyone's interested lemme know. Perhaps some downwinder action?

I'm suppose to get off at 1 and could be at the coast by 3 tomorrow. Will be spending the weekend in Manzo with the dad for our b-days. But I may travel elsewhere. So yeah I'm down

| Yep its gonna be good. I just got back from a sunset session and had my a$$ handed to me. Some of the biggest waves Ive been in by far. Ive gotten pretty good at gettin on top of the white wash, and up the smaller waves but when Im goin out away from shore and they break on top of me, kinda gets a little much for this rookie. So whats the secret to the timing? Or is there one? What do you guys do as your headin out and the timing isnt looking right on one comin at you? Just a quick transition and turn and run? Have fun out here this weekend, its gonna be sweet!!

Great, here I was hoping for glass and 15mph winds  Got my butt handed to me at the gorge on wed when the wind picked up guess I may get the beat down again this weekend  I'll be in manzo tomorrow and Saturday, hope to get out mid tide (hi~1630) and stay way upwind from everyone in my kiddie pool or maybe try a short downwind from north to the street end or b loop.

Just charge it man!! It helps to have a surfboard for days like today where the added float and speed can get you up and over the wash, as well as keeping speed to send it over the big ones and get to the outside to come back in to the line up - thats the trick! Either face the line when your timing is right or leap it and try to line up for the next. Pick the spot, get to the outside, and come back in. Youll feel the pressure growing beneath you and will be set up to keep the kite high and ride the sh#t out of it. Commitment! - Dont be scared to take one one on the head.

Still looking pretty overcast on the strip and at Manzo.

The overcast is almost burned off here in seaside, and the bushes are starting to move. But it looks clear as can be over the water. Bet it will be good to go by the time any of you city folk get out here

| on site manzo report... just got back from the beach (bike ride) overcast but blue in the sky looks like itll burn of but i doubt we'll see the sun. very low tide. wind just picked up a bit ago to 16/19/20. waves are white and pretty close together. I have to be on the phone for the next hour and hope to head down after lunch.

Too far upwind and you're in the lee of the point. Strange/bad things can happen when you move to close to the lee in strong wind. Talk to a local. I'd say the "R" word but I'm sure people are getting tired of that.
I *hear* that the ponds near Whalen Island between Oceanside and Sand Lake take most directions and should be butter. I've checked it out driving by on my way to Pacific City before, but I haven't kited there yet. If you get blown out at Manzo, maybe that's worth a shot. I'm sure they are tide dependent and I don't have any beta for you at all other than what I've just said.

I am a manzo local, well only fri-sun but thats close enuf for me I've been flying on land there for along time and know the beach side really well. Figured it was finally time to get out on the water! Was looking for a calmer kiddie pool to occasionally go to, but ive gotta get used to anyway. I'll check out some of those spots. Thanks! If you see someone in a buggy or on a landboard chances are its me or 1 other guy.

| Speaking of ponds and butter, are the ponds up north here any good on anything besides the wintertime easterlies? Im kinda wantin to try out some flatwater myself and wodering if Jones is my best bet or somewhere else?

The ponds only work on an east wind. So your best bet is Jones, it has some of the best flat water on the Columbia and its empty.

Just like a lot of kiting, it all depends on what the situation is as to what you are going to do - go over the wave or turn and run.
Basically though, as you are heading out, you are watching for the wave to stand up and throw or stand up and just crumble over the lip. If it's going to throw, and it's going to be on your head, you turn and run. I do not recommend taking one on the head - a wave has hit my shoulder so hard shoving my shoulder into my jaw that it chipped my tooth, not to mention getting my bell rung at other times. Unfortunately, only experience in the waves can tell you what that wave is going to do.
Check the NOAA site for help though. For instance, on this site,

under Wave Summary, it will tell you the steepness. Four foot and "Steep" could be likened to eight foot with a "Swell" steepness. If the wave just crumbles over the lip, then you can ride right over some pretty big swells, but if it is "steep", you are going to see some hollow waves that will hit you hard.
If you don't think it's going to hollow out and throw (on top of you is the main problem) as you get close to the wave, fly your kite high to slow you down. This allows you to get on your back foot, keep your tip up, and not get pulled off your board; because the kite is low and is pulling you through the wave instead of over. Lean back on your board and again, keep your tip up. As long as you are going slow and your tip doesn't sink, you are probably going to make it over even a 5'+ white water. When the wave is really moving fast, like it just threw and the water crashed just in front of you, it may still suck you down though.
Before you actually get on top of the white water, you start to dive your kite to get your speed back and keep you from sinking. This timing obviously takes practice.
Have fun, and do be afraid of taking one on the head.

Thanks for all the tips for sure. I got some real good practice today. The waves werent as big as I thought they might be, but still lots of fun. I pretty much got the whitwater down, its just those ones that crash on me right as I approach them. Those are the ones that hurt. But thanks again for the tips, looks like it will be sunday before attempting to apply them. And excuse the lame pic, but its one of my daughter best pics, and I have to share the stoke somewhere leftover from today.

They are good on S/SE/SW too. You can kite northerlies at pkg lot b on the river side, caution is advised on an outgoing tide.
