Does anyone have any information about kite boarding on Lake Dillon, Summit County Colorado? My brothers tell me they've seen people kite boarding in the summer and I'll be there the last week of June and wanted to know if I should bring my quiver? |

In the Northwest corner of New Mexico, right on the border with Colorado there is a lake that the Di-Ne', "Navajo", Nation uses to cool their power turbines. This lake is right next to bloomfield and gets really nice winds and maintains a temp of 80 in the middle of winter.
If you search New Mexico Windsurfing you will get a contact for the club. Ask Berry or Joe about colorado.
Be very careful of high elevation kiteboarding! Most wind is driven by storms approaching, or passing. ***Expect quick severe directional wind changes!!!****

Thanks for the information and the safety tip. That's the information I was looking for. I know there is really good sailing on Lake Dillon so I assumed it might be good kite wind also.
Thanks again. |

It's definitely ridable. I've been there in the winter and have seen kiters out snow kiting on the south end of the lake closest to Breck. I'm sure it blows in the summer too. |

I used to live there long before kiteboarding was invented. As I recall, There is NO
Swimming Allowed in Lake Dillon. We did have a good time sailing in boats there and the wind was fairly steady. I do know that they snowkite at Farmer's Corner which is at the SouthWest part of the lake. That spot is also known as the Sanatarium by the snowkiters there.
If you are only going there for a week or two, I would say, leave your kiting gear at home. There is a ton of stuff to do there, rafting, fishing, hiking, biking, golf, tennis, swimming, sight seeing, wildlife viewing and more.
Have a great trip! |

A better bet is actually about 4 hrs driving east in Nebraska. The spot is called Lake Maconahay (not spelled right). Drive on the sandy shores, camp for $5. There was an article in kiteboarding about it once. I rode there and the wind is more consistent than Lake Dillon which tends to be alpine/gusty. |
