Flat water is great for woop-d-doos and twiddle lee d's.
With a jetty the northwest swell is tripped and peels downwind if you are lucky, enabling the rider to ride the wave like a KITE-SURFER not like a surfer ,this means powered turns with the kite low and as fast as you can go. Jetties also slow the current so that you can get back to a recurring wave to do it again .The Or. coast has two locations that produce this, one is Newport but lighter winds make fast riding an exception because big kites are too slow to turn your kite with EVERY board turn .
Florence on the other hand is a known windhole and every summer afternoon the wind picks up to 8.0 conditions which allows for faster turning kites .My pals and I have been sailing the Or. coast for over 25 years last seven on kites and before that as pole riders, in the day there would be hundreds of pole dancers at Florence . Last year one expierencd pole rider drowned while we were there ,when it's big it's dangerous.
We sailed an open ocean location for 4 years (Whiskey Run) it also has an underwater feature that trips waves and after a long leg burnin run you would have to out a mile to get back so easier to do downwinders .
fISH -BOY FINALLY RULES ,2 yr. wave rider Jason (registered) was upside down on a big wave and barreled up with a witness, not bad for a dough-head |

| yer right its isn't the gorge. It is more the combo of really strong wind so we can fly those fast 7ms in the waves, and the way the waves peel . But as I know, I suck so what do I know , I will be making it up to the ft. now to see where the real deal is. |

As a pdxer and a former poleboarder who used to frequent Florence in the spring for big wind and waves i can say that these boys have it right. Newport and Florence often have some of the best wind and wave combo. without a jetty everything is blown out and nearly unrideable when its windy. The fort rarely get this kind of wind so it doesnt matter up there.
