Tue Apr 28, 09 11:22 am cold weather gear question |
|
|
Hi Guys,
I wear a 3-3 full length wetsuit with short sleeves. The water is too cold for that unit here in the gorge right now.
I am looking for advice on which supplemental gear I could get the biggest bang for the buck to supplement until the water warms up? _________________ Thanks for your reply |

| What do you mean by supplemental gear? It'd be easier/better to just buy a new, thicker suit (5/3 or 4/3), but if you don't want to do that, I'm not really sure how you're going to get more insulation. |

More useful than at first appears. From the product description:

Thanks G-man. Yea I am trying to avoid the $250 new wetsuit outlay for a handful of outings in May. For you who have used these... are they best for outside a wetsuit or inside?
I have also seen some guys wearing what looks like a goretex shell...kinda like the kayakers wear? Anybody use these? _________________ Thanks for your reply |

I've got a gore-tex kayak top I use over a 4-3 wetsuit. It does nothing to keep you warm in the water, but it REALLY warms you up when you're riding or walking. Make sure you're wearing enough rubber for a long swim, but a kayak top really makes a wetsuit warm on top of the water. |

| Just noticed in the classifieds someone is selling slightly used Billabong 5/4 wetsuits with detachable hoods for 75.00 to 100.00. |

I have an old 2001 promotion XXL 4/3 full suit. When it's really cold, and I'm a reptile, I wear a pull over hood and booties.
For the most part this set up is good to 40deg water, and 60deg days. With the hood I'm good in 40deg and 50deg weather.
The trick on this old windsurfing suit is the wind shear material that deflects wind.
The real chill happens when you take a face first digger and water flushes the suit at your neck. BRRRR
Booties with a leg strap above the ankle are another way to increase the heat of the suit. On the coast it's a must for surfing.
I've been looking to get a new suit so if you want to take a look at mine I'm ready to deal.

| I have to say the going out in a 3/3 even if its layered with polypro and a rashguard is a bad idea. If you have any sort of a swim your gonna be putting yourself in a potentially dangerous situation. Do it right and drop some cash on a 5/4, 5/3, or 4/3 suit. I think 2nd wind has some 08 leftover suits on hand. Also might want to check out Promotion...a thick rashguard is gonna cost you $65-80 aand you can easily get another suit for another $50-75 on top of that. |

Thanks Guys,
Yea Chooch ...I think Promotion would be the best way to go but their 5-4 goes for around $300-not in the cards right now.
I hate to wait for warm conditions but I think you guys are right about limited warmth on add ons due to water rushing in during a dragging situation if I lose my board.
Could get serious fast. _________________ Thanks for your reply |

a 3 mil with a 1.5 "steamer" on top will keep you warm,..IMO
But i would'nt trust a long swim,..just think about how far your willing to swim back before going out that far. |

| Don't know what kind of deals are on Ebay now, but I bought my first decent 4/3 Rip Curl (brand new - previous year) on there a few years back for ~$80. |

Sometimes you have to pay to play. More than any other wetsuit, you should hold out for the top of the line 5/4's. really good seems play a huge role, as does suits with windskin patches that block the wind out.
5/4 wetsuit = $250
3 mill booties $75
cost to prevent a hypothermic drowning...priceless. |
