Hey all,
Was curious whether there are any ppl that kite out near Arlington to Boardman on the river? I usually ride at sauvies or stevenson but I am moving to work at the port of morrow. It looks like there are a few decent launch spots and i think the wind is pretty good but i havent been out there for a few years and I know its not to populated. Any thoughts would be cool.

Also a side note: any where to ride quads/dirt bikes out there? I heard about juniper dunes near the tri's?

Cheers Very Happy

You can drift launch by the grain elevators, but it's way better to just drive to 3 mile.
The best off road trails are above Goldendale, Wa. It's a long way to Juniper from Arlinton.

I kited at Boardman last year. Was fun, the river is really wide!!! I Will be there again in August.
There is a good launch spot in Boardman, take the exit for the marina but at the fork right instead of left to marina. The next left past the resturant is the beach.

Just watch out for the tons of people there on the weekends Shocked Shocked

And stay away from the marina jetty's, is a total vacuum dead zone area!!!!!!!! Evil or Very Mad

right on,

yea im actually going to be in boardman, so goldendale looks pretty far also. I got some friends outside of the tri's i might be able to ride with so juniper might be a good weekend spot, ill have to try out goldendale tho. I am super sore from riding at florence yesterday, it was sic.

Back to KB tho. Where is 3 mile? Also after reading some posts sounds like Rufus and Roosevelt are where its at. Whats a typical kb day at Rufus/Roosevelt? 15-25? Hows the launches?

PostMon Apr 27, 09 6:00 am    check out Thumper Talk for riding areas Reply with quote

Thumper Talk web site. has a Where to Ride page. Check out Oregon and Washington. The Ukiah area lists 150 miles of trail. I couldn't tell how much is open to quads. There is also a link to "Quad talk". There does not seem to be as much info there. Driving some distance for recreation seems to be the way things are these days. Kite boarding sites are closer for me than quality trail riding sites. With more constraints on riding sites, they could get even farther away.

i'm going to be out in Arlington in a few weeks. Bulae (or anyone), where is 3 mile? Is that across the river on the WA side? If so, where do you cross the river? (I can't think of any bridges around there).

3 mile is exit 151, before boardman

launch from the boat launch, not where the windsurfers launch (too dangerous).

Usually less wind and bigger swell than arlington and roosevelt when on.

Thanks,
Is there anything I should know about rules around this launch?
Does this photo look accurate?

PostMon Jul 27, 09 9:01 am    The best launch is the boat dock, but Reply with quote

if that is scary go to the east side of the windsurfing launch. It's shallow and there is some grass but if you line your kite you can walk into water and launch. I usually wrap my lines for this launch. So on the pic lower left hand corner right side of the windsurfing launch, east side of the rocks.

This will give you a downwind run at the jetty gap.

Go upwind to the green bouy marker. Be careful out there as it is a long way from help.

I have tried this exact launch a few times now, as well as driving down the dirt road further West to be upwind of the "jetty" that sticks out there (i.e. where most windsurfers launch).

The boat launch feels the safer of the two options (esp on big days, it's not so fun to launch directly upwind of a rocky jetty on 6M). Although that was launching the kite West of the Jetty. I have seen some people drift launch at the Jetty but on the East side. They seemed to make that work, and it looked like a fairly safe option though a pain to get back to the launch there.

If you launch from the boat launch, you have to have someone hold the kite at the top of the ramp, as the wind down by the water is not clean, due to wind shadow of the jetty.

Yah, it's pretty flat and nice in there. Winds a little squirrelier than on the outside. But it's lots of fun and no prob to hang in there.

There tend to be a few intermediate windsurfers hanging out here and working on their jibes. But usually only like 3-4 the times I've been there.

It's one of the best wave places you will ever see. If it's too windy at Arlington go to 3 mile.

I used to live in Pendleton and self launched there many times.

The swell lines up really nice right by the jetty, but it gets shallow. Most of the folks who windsurf there are very cool and will help land or launch.

The problem I found when launching at the boat ramp was the rocks and rough concrete working your kite.

Be careful when running your lines at the boat ramp as folks will run em over.
