The link above is the wind data from the DEQ site. The problem is it is delayed several hours.

It would be nice to mount a remote solar powered sensor on the piling and then put a reciever at the DEQ station and use their internet connection.

The other problem is that the site which the sensor is located isn't in a good location for what we want. As one enters the parking areas for the beach, the sensor is left of the road by about 100 yards, down a dirt access road. It is screened by trees, so wind readings are not as accurate and I doubt any camera view would be any use.

Here is another sauvie deq sensor link:
http://www.deq.state.or.us/labdata/odeqhrly.txt

Actually the data is only delayed about 10-15 minutes from the hour, got this email from DEQ:
"All of the data on the DEQ web site is public information. You can capture whatever you like. You should be aware that all of this data is “raw” and unvalidated. It is also displayed in Pacific Standard Time all year. We do not change to Daylight Savings Time."

So 9:00AM is really 10:00AM (I think I have that right).

Wow, that's crazy. Wind on the Water gives you FREE access to automated voice and text alerts sent to your cell for seven of your favorite sensors! Thanks for the link!

Years ago we installed a wind sensor on a channel marker in the SF bay (~1 mile out - radio 2 miles back to my house). Decided the best approach was not to ask. So we are installing the gear when a coast guard boat comes by. Figured we were busted, but they just waved. Maintaining the sensor was a pain and 2 years later iWindsurf put one in (I think we forced their hand - they were losing lots of subscribers at 3rd). If you go this approach, make the sensor look official (we had something like Stanford Wind Research Project stenciled on the side).

This is why the slackers at ikitesurf will not take any action. They will not generate additional revenue by installing a sensor at Sauvie. Most people that kite Sauvie probably already have a ikitesurf account. However, if they start to loose a bunch of subscribers they may change their mind...

I contacted them awhile ago saying if the sensor wasn't in place then I was going to cancel my membership. There is so much info readily accessible with my iphone now, i could use that $180 towards our own sensor cell phone.

I'm going to contact ODFW today. I'll let you know what they think/feel about a sensor.

PDXmedic is going to contact DEQ about using their internet connection at their weather station.

I think we need to approach the homeowners and see if we can talk with them.
I stopped at the "south" house last week , no one was home and it didn't look very lived in. There was a oldsmobile or buick outside that they had mowed around recently,... that was all I could determine. My question to them would be "can we place a wind sensor or river cam on your property?"
I'll check in with the tenants/homeowners next time I'm out there.

A few years ago I spoke with the homeowners just north of the launch sight close to the channel marker and at that time they were receptive to the idea. I think there is a telephone pole on their property that would work.
