Wow you you guys! I honestly think you've done plenty of research on this sensor. Now it's just pooling our resources, I for one would be quite willing, rather more willing, to make monthly payments to this idea over paying some other source for wind forecasts! Keeping the sensor on private property and working out some agreement w/locals if possible is key. How many do we have willing to front monthly payments?

Well, I don't want to put the cart before the horse but if we can get it set up, I will absolutely dump ikite and just use the stevenson and sauvie sensor to figure out week day opportunities.

Unless someone has a permanent internet connection within a reasonable distance (DSL or CABLE) then we would have to pay monthly charges for an internet connection. If there is an open wifi signal that we can grab (which we can use a high power antennae to try and grab). then the cost is only $120 a year for updates every ten minutes.

At some point, its just easier to forget about all the antennas and repeaters and dealing with home owners and just investing in the cell phone operated unit. The cell phone is actually built into the unit and activated by the company when they make the unit.

updates every ten minutes 24/7/365 will cost $700 a year. It will probably save the average person about $40 in gas a year. It costs me $5 per trip at 31mpg.....

if you wanted to scale it back to every 30 minutes it would cost $430/year.

My plan would be to find a place where we could legally place the unit, then work out the exact equipment needed, install costs, etc and then give everyone the info and beg for money.

The first year is going to cost money folks..$10 or $20 donations are probably not going to go very far. If everyone put in $40 then we would need 68 people to donate. That would get us everything plus a years service. It would be great if we could install the thing and then hand it over to ikitesurf...

every year we would need 50 people to put in $15.

It is the same sensor as Ikite, but you can get it minute-by-minute if one calls--503-543-6401. . .

Great now the airport is always going to be busy. Evil or Very Mad

Might have to delete that... Wink

I'm still confused why Ikite has the money set aside, but they can't do anything? Do they require a home owner to provide necessary resources (location, power, internet, etc)? How much do their units typically cost? Could they install a similar cell phone style unit with the money they've set aside or at least chip in for the cost? I think it's absurd they supposedly have the money just sitting idly for years.

They're sayin the Coast Guard is the holdup. Ideally we'd want the wind sensor on the north channel marker-- and that is USCG property. Ikite will not disclose to me (at least not so far) what they've budgeted for renting a spot on the channel marker.
One would assume that Ikite has to pay rent for most of their sensor locations and if they can strike a deal with the coast guard-- for like "no rent", they'll probably wait a long time to get that kind of deal. Otherwise they'd be dealing with homeowners and property owners who would certainly and should reasonably charge rent.

Thanks Kraemer. So if we offered a viable alternative they might consider it? Or is that just crazy thinking?

The could install the damn thing on one of the dolphins out there with basically no hassle at all. The corps owns the dolphins in navigable water but does not maintain or replace them.

I had a client who cut about 5 of them down, then the neighbor sued him saying the action caused his beach to erode. The corps response was essentially.."huh ok, leave us out of it".

The other side of the equation is I'm sure you could install a steel pole and mount it on top of that. I'll avoid verbalizing what I really think I kite is doing.

Years ago we installed a wind sensor on a channel marker in the SF bay (~1 mile out - radio 2 miles back to my house). Decided the best approach was not to ask. So we are installing the gear when a coast guard boat comes by. Figured we were busted, but they just waved. Maintaining the sensor was a pain and 2 years later iWindsurf put one in (I think we forced their hand - they were losing lots of subscribers at 3rd). If you go this approach, make the sensor look official (we had something like Stanford Wind Research Project stenciled on the side).

What about cgka? Are you guys at the point to help donate to a yearly cost for a sensor? I would pay 10 or 15 more for a membership if I knew it was going to maintain local sensors.

I really don't think putting all the money into a sensor and mounting it illegally is a great idea. Let's get legit and find a spot for it, someone in the kite community has to have a contact.

Are you still looking for a site, I know a private homeowner that lives just upriver that may be willing to locate a cam, does have some old piling out front as well.
Let me know if you want me to ask? or how I can help?

Slump can you help with this location thing? I'm computer inept, but are you able to show with google earth where this home owner is located? Let's go onsite next time we have some wind and check this thing out if google earth doesn't do the trick!

I PM'd with slump, the site is actually kind of far from the beach. Not beyond the capability of a couple of relays but still kind of far. 3-4 miles with no line of sight. i'm going to talk to WDFW and see what there take is. Don't know if they have phone or internet at the building I am interested in.

What about the other sensor out there>? the one that I-kite suck uses? I thought that it was close by but its just really blocked from the wind.

It's about 100 yards inland from the very start (south end) of the parking area if I remember right. You can see if you look down the dirt road going inland right at the entrance to the parking area. iKite sensor note says "Data from this station is courtesy of MesoWest and other contributing organizations". I have NO idea why they decided to mount it so far inland, but even if it was right at the paved road it wouldn't be very accurate in regards to where we kite. The dike and trees along the road would mess with the wind before it got to the sensor. The channel marker would be the optimum placement.

Yeah, its here.. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=45.7681,-122.7719(E5POR+-+%22Portland%2FSauvie+Island%22)&t=h&ie=UTF8&ll=45.771235,-122.761402&spn=0.073998,0.161705&z=13&iwloc=A

I don't think they cared about the wind for kiters it is probably for agricultural purposes. But, the good thing is that there is probably a phone line and internet connection right there....

Seems like Oregon DEQ owns it.

Is the the ODFW or BLM that manages the parking lots across from the beach? I could possibly contact them to find a mounting place on one of the levies.
