It seems the biggest risk to using a gojo is the ridicule from people whom think you'll care about their opinion.
The biggest benifit is recovering your $600 board instead of hoping someone finds it and calls the phone number you wrote on it (in which case you will be liable for a minimum of a 6 pack of beer). It will also let others know that you are still early in your learning curve and if they are considerate they will give you a little extra space.
The start of my second season riding I found it helpful as the spring flow in the Columbia is much higher than later in the year and it slows the movement of the board and increases the visibility.
For beginers it is definately safer than a leash, and will likley save you $$$. After you've been riding for a while you will outgrow it.

As a beginner, using a reel seemed like a good alternative to having to body drag up to my board or risk losing it altogether. However, last summer I crashed and the real whipped the board back at me. It hit the back of my helmet with incredible force. I don't like to think out what might have happened if it had it me somewhere else. The gojoe looks like a good way to go. I am still wearing my helmet. I like to be seen when I am in the water and the other kiters know to look out for me.
Sorry to be in the way so much. I hope next year to get much better and be less of a water hazzard. Thanks everybody at the sandbar for being nice about it.

Thanks for the entertainment! Funny how the general consensus went from "no way, that's gay!" to "everyone in the Gorge uses them" in less than a year. Guess you were a trendsetter Moto!
Seriously, thanks frenchy for the reference and discussion on the GoJo. I'd never heard of them or seen one before. I'm in my first season of kiting and will definitely try it out! (especially since my board is black...)

dude if you are serious about the product, consider getting it from one of our local shops up here in the NW. BKB has these and can ship.
GOJOE
some of our puget sound riders use these. while maybe not for everyone, it is effective in what it does....

Glad you liked the post - GoJoes are great. As soon as the season gets under way just go to the lost and found section of this forum and just count the number of boards that get away from people losing a board sucks!!

Why buy a gojo? Couldn't you just as well duct-tape a water wing to your board, or an empty gallon milk jug, or an inflatable mickey mouse? If you are gonna be funky, you might as well do it up with some good reverse steez. See example below (photo compliments of Rico).
Actually I just wanted to repost this pic for about the 4th time. It's just too amazing.
It is a damn shame though that his gojo must have fallen off before Henry caught the moment.
