I would bet around 50% of kiteboarders have tried climbing. Just like almost any adreniline sport it sounds a lot more dangerous than it is if done "properly". Heading out and free soloing is like teaching yourself to kite on a two line kite during a tropical storm. Getting proper teaching and learning the basics is key to having a fun and safe time.

Janet and I started climbing in Arizona. I was lucky to have a climbing gym 5 min from my house and awesome climbing and bouldering spots very close to phoenix. The best thing about it is you can climb year round down there, which for climbing is important if you want to progress past 5.9-10.

When we moved to Massechusetts I built a bouldering cave in my garage and we used to head up to Rumney or boulder in Rhode Island. Rumney is awesome, watching some world class climbers like David Graham lead climbing on Waimea wall really gives you an idea of what the human body is capable of.

I do agree with most folks that say outdoor climbing>>indoor, but indoor is still a blast. The problem around here is finding good places to climb that are dry in the winter and close. Smith Rock is great, but quite a drive. Everyone should give Monkey Face a try, it was my first multipitch aid climb.

I haven't been climbing for a few years now, but I just recently hauled my bouldering gym out to the gorge and plan on putting it up in my barn for the winter. I would definitely be game to head out and have some fun on some easier routes if people are interested in the gorge. I used to lead up to 5.10B sport but bet a 5.9 would give me trouble right now until my grip strength comes back.

If you think climbing in the gym is fun, wait until you get 1,000 feet up a nice vertical slab of granite.
