Dave.....kook is for all new kiters to the forum and go easy on the Fernet con coca amigo.
Overall, Argentina is good for kiting....but it's not the Pacific Northwest.
I've been working in Cordoba Argentina for the past 5 years when I'm not in the Gorge. The kiting has been growing as fast as their economy. In 2004 we had about 10 guys and a lot of carnage on the water but now we estimate about 100 riders and our first 2 girls this year. Not too bad considering we are landlocked in the middle of the country. Same vibe as the Gorge with very mellow wind junkies in a fun culture except dinner starts around Midnight and a 6:00 am return home is the norm.
Buenos Aires has kiting all up and down the eastern coastline. Import taxes are wicked expensive plus you typically need a car which is another luxury down here for most people so it tends to be an older dangling crowd so my old Gringo ass fits right in. Buenos Aires has some good shops but used gear will sell for almost what we buy new in the US so I usually pack-mule gear for my friends. I definitely had the first Slingshot in Cordoba and my Rev's attract drool.
Cordoba has a lake nearby called Los Molinos (Aka Sauvies) but slightly more steady so that is where we try to get our "viento" each weekend. The cool thing about Argentina is you cannot own land or build near the water so the shore is public and open to everyone with mostly grazing horses. Park your car, rig and ride. Fun safe culture...no rules...live your life as you wish....and watch out for horse or cow mierda. We will wakeboard behind cars once in awhile but nobody skims so next time down I'm bringing my old Hein that will be VERY popular. The people are highly educated, hilarious and stunningly beautiful. Ask Tyburski what he thinks about Argentina and a very happy smile will emerge.
Argentina is the 8th largest country in the world in physical size but only 40M population with about 35% of that living in Bs.As. Way too busy for my taste. Desert in the north and in the south Tierra Del Fuego iceburgs and whales. Ted Turner and Sylvester Stallone damn near own all of Patagonia.
January is vacation season so the country basically shuts down and if you've got the cash you go to Punte del Este Uraquay for some good wind and surf. Mar del Plata is also good for kiting but popular and very crowded this time of year. Broneah from Michigan teach lesson further south in Patagonia near Bariloche, that has great skiing. Northwest area has Las Lena's skiing close to the Andes/Chilean border. I briefly snowkited there 2 years ago with a SS B5 that freaked people out because it was unheard of but with snowkiting's breakout this year I expect that to change muy rapido. Exchange rate is $1.00 USD vs $3.47 pesos but inflation is out of control so most people still live month to month. Real estate in my area has increased about 250% in the last 3 years. The thought of owning a house is constantly discussed but thought of as almost impossible.
Overall South America is still unclaimed on many levels. Brazil, Chile and Peru are all a short flight away but Lima I believe/hope is becoming a new affordable kiting hotspot plus you have Machu Picchu to check out. Lan Chile has consistent round trip rates from LAX to LIMA for $198USD. (8 hour flight) Some of our operations will move to Lima so I'm hoping for the best. Paracas also looks quite choice and Jorge from kiteboardingparacas has excellent communication for taking care of the details.
Sorry for the long book.....Argentina is fun and if you want to meet some nice crazy people you may never leave but you will burn a full day getting here so IMO there are closer destinations for serious kiters, or bring all your old 06 and 07 gear to pay for your trip.
