I want to get into skim boarding this coming up season - just trying to figure out which skim board would be best. I see a lot of non-kiteboarding specific boards - I don't know if they will work. But I also see Nobile makes a sweet looking skim board with fins.

Advantages or disadvantages to a skim with fins? Advantages or disadvantage to going with a non-kiting specific skim?

I used the pink foam for my first one. If I do another I will probably buy some real foam. Pretty freakin easy to do and cheap until you get to the glass. Still spent less than 100 dollars and have enough resin to do another board. If you do it just go easy on the surform when you are scraping the gorilla glue. It sanded off just fine and would have been a little cleaner without using the surform so much. Actually next time I will use something besides gorilla glue since it foams up so much.

I copied the dimensions from a board people said they were having fun on. I think I did 51 1/2 x 20 and put some rocker in the nose and just a wee bit in the tail.

I don't know how it rides yet but I would imagine it will be ok for what its worth.

Good project for the winter.

Specialized kite skims are sweet. I've really enjoyed my Victoria skim though, the big one. It doesn't have fins, is a bit soft (flex) but I think those are manageable. They are pretty cheap and my friend has one too that he put 3/4" fins on. That is easy to do too. Not having fins really lets you feel a board and learn how to really turn a board using its edges. Moving your feet on the board to gain the best angles for turning, spinning, etc. Really great for learning to jibe, basic unhooked tricks like flat 3's, etc.
