So I'm stuck in Portland right now, I84 is looking like a no-go, how's everything in town? Anyone been over the Mt. Hood route?

Just got back into PDX from meadows. The roads were fine, could be the way to go if you don't mind the extra drive time.

Why are the roads closed anyway?

Sounds stupid.

Some of our customers have been travelling back and forth over Hood. 84 will likely be closed until Monday morning due to the blizzard forecast.
Although they recommend not driving unless it is an emergency, apparently xmas shopping and getting your ski/snowboard gear qualifies as an 'emergency' in Hood River.
Our shop has been ape-shit busy since Thursday with record business. We're so tired I haven't even gone outside to play.

..WINTER STORM WARNING NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 PM PST MONDAY FOR THE HOOD RIVER VALLEY...

THE WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW IS NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 PM PST MONDAY.

SNOW SHOWERS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH MONDAY. EXPECT AN ADDITIONAL 2 TO 4 INCHES THIS AFTERNOON...WITH 5 TO 8 INCHES TONIGHT. SNOW SHOWERS WILL DECREASE ON MONDAY...BUT ANOTHER 1 TO 2 INCHES OF SNOW ARE POSSIBLE.

A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE FORECAST THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL DANGEROUS. ONLY TRAVEL IN AN EMERGENCY. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL...KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT... FOOD...AND WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.

THE WINTER STORM WARNING FOR SNOW IS NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 PM PST MONDAY.

COLD AIR REMAINS TRAPPED IN THE COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE. SNOW SHOWERS THIS AFTERNOON WILL BRING ANOTHER 3 TO 6 INCHES OF SNOW... ALONG WITH POSSIBLE BRIEF FREEZING RAIN. ADDITIONAL SNOW TONIGHT MAY RESULT IN ANOTHER 4 TO 7 INCHES.

IN THE WESTERN END OF THE GORGE...GUSTY EAST WINDS OF 25 TO 35 MPH WILL CREATE CONSIDERABLE BLOWING AND DRIFTING OF SNOW. IN ADDITION

...WIND CHILL WILL HOVER NEAR ZERO THROUGH TONIGHT.

ODOT usually closes I-84 when the rate of precipitation exceeds their plows' ability to clear it. Mostly for the safety of travelers, but also for the safety of their workers and the economic factor (they only have so much budget for winter and can't predict the weather duration).

I've commuted I-84 for over a decade and have seen it this bad before, but not often. Squalls blow snow and reduce visibility to nothing, resulting in some pretty scary white-knuckle stretches. I've done Cascade Locks to Viento entirely in 2nd gear before, and been sent off the road by a jack-knifing trailer. Truckers don't seem to respect the safety required and frequently speed to make their deadlines.

So while it's true that seasoned winter drivers can safely make the trek, the average driver isn't as seasoned as they believe, and they keep our emergency crews tied up and endangered, let alone blow budgets tending to people who shouldn't be driving in this stuff and conditions that will outlast their perseverance.

Great to hear your business is macking though, Pepi! Thanks for the sweet deal - glad I grabbed that board before you sold out! See ya on the 24th (hopefully!).
