I guess once your firm grows large enough, the principles of market discipline no longer apply.
Must be nice. So what's that, five branches of government now? The Congressional, the Executive, the Judiciary, the Financial and the Automotive?
Too bad though...I'm sure that in the ashes of the failure of the Big Three we would have seen the birth of a diverse group of smaller, more efficient and globally competitive US car brands.

Yeah I know, I was saying if they were allowed to go bankrupt, we'd see current Detroit resources reallocated among newly formed, smaller automotive companies.
Not wanting [read: being unable] to pay your bills is failure in business, isn't it?

I was an engineer for conveyor contractor that built the body, paint, and final assembly conveyors for the big three. I also did skilled trades (union) training for our systems so I've spent plenty of time in car plants. There are so many rules that the workers can't even begin to be productive. It seems as though they have to ask someone else to flush the toilet after they take a shit just because the union has a position for that. And the management allowed it to happen.
Let me tell you that they do not deserve a bailout in any way, shape or form. The companies, UAW and at least half of the money sucking dealers just need to go out of business, period. There are plenty of competitive cars being built in the U.S. by Honda, Subaru, Toyota, and others. They will be the ones keeping the tier two suppliers at work and the autoworkers employed. They will all be much better off without GM, Chrysler and Ford and their ridiculous rules and requirements.
Call your congress persons and tell them to let the big three fail! Or watch your tax dollars fly out the window.

http://walden.house.gov/ for those of us in the 2nd district. You can use the "Email Greg Now" button on the left side.
Here is my letter:
Quote: | The big three auto manufactures are sluggish businesses that deserve to fail. The UAW has only further driven the businesses into the ground thanks to the policies they've peddled.
Here is a quote from an informed friend of mine who also lives in the 2nd district of Oregon and I support his opinion:

in a glut of cars.
perhaps the U.S.Government could do what the British Government did for
thier car industry.
If it makes sense the gov won't be in on it

In a weird twist of fate the union is responsible for many of those rules. There was a time when unions were valuable for factory workers for a variety of reasons but in the case of the present day auto unions, they are responsible for skyrocketing costs and the export of jobs. My father was a manager in an auto plant for 30+ years. he once fired a guy for sleeping on the job after two warnings. And this wasn't a "hey my kid was up all night sick, I'm just exahusted" sleeping on the job, this was a I moved my desk under the stairs and put cardboard up around my desk and was in full on sleeping. My father fired him on the spot, two weeks later, union had him back on the job. My dad once told a guy on the line "hey, come see me in my office after lunch". My dad wanted to talk to him about some of the ordering that needed to be done. The union rep got word of the "incident" and my dad was suspended for 3 days for "unfair stress imposed on an employee" (b/c my father didn't tell him WHY he needed to see him after lunch.
I also spent a summer working in a Chrysler plant and made a ridiculous amount of money for doing a job fairly trained monkeys could do. "let me get this straight, your going to pay me $21/hour to place this sheet of metal in here and push this button? Ummm, ok. Double time overtime? Really!! Triple on holidays? Right on!!
Guys were doing coke in the bathrooms, breaking their machines to go play cards in the break room, just stupid shit.
I think the bailout is total BS. And all the republic windbags talking about BO being a socialist while the government is going to bail these guys out....?

I was doing training in a car plant on the night shift. It is really tough to stay up all night. Sorry, but engineers tend to work during the day. Anyway, there were two of us doing a total of 8 hours of training for each of three shifts. We had to cover all the shifts so we split the training duties so that one of us could take a break and get a little shut eye while the other was leading the class. When I was done with my part of the class I asked my fellow trainer where I could go in the plant to take a short nap. He said just find a car on the line with a front seat, get in and take a snooze. So I went down to the line and did just that. Problem was there was already a union hourly sleeping in the back. He looked up, I got out, he went back to sleep and I went to a different car. It was in one of the first Chrysler minivan plants.
Everything pdxmonkeyboy says is absolutely believable. The senate is voting on the bill as early as tonight. Still time to make your voice heard. Shame that the House was so quick to cave in. Somewhere close to 70% of the American public is against this. The best course is for them to reorganize under chapter 11 and bring their (labor) costs inline with the rest of the manufacturing industries in this country.
People will loose jobs but why keep making cars nobody wants to buy? What are they going to do with all those cars they are going to build with our tax money? Answer: They are going to sit on lots and deteriorate away. Might as well burn the money. The promise of a better ''save the planet' car 2 years down the road is a hoax. In the software world they call that vaporware. Let Toyota, Honda, Subaru and the others do it. They have plenty of affordable American labor and component content to be considered 'American cars.' There actually isn't such a thing and probably shouldn't be. Remember too that the big three are the biggest producers of military vehicles. No wonder they cost so much and don't work very well. What a novel way to cut military spending.
