THE COLDEST AIR OF THE WINTER SEASON WILL BE SETTLING IN OVER
SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON AND NORTHWEST OREGON THIS WEEKEND...BRINGING
VERY COLD TEMPERATURES TO THE REGION AND SNOW LEVELS POSSIBLY NEAR
THE VALLEY FLOOR.

THE INITIAL SURGE OF COLD AIR WILL SPREAD INTO SOUTHWEST
WASHINGTON AND NORTHWEST OREGON FRIDAY NIGHT AS A STRONG COLD
FRONT MOVES THROUGH. WHILE AIR AHEAD OF THIS FRONT WILL BE
RELATIVELY MILD...VERY COLD AIR BEHIND THIS FRONT HAS THE
POTENTIAL TO DROP SNOW LEVELS QUITE LOW...NOT UNLIKE A SNOW EVENT
THAT OCCURRED IN MID NOVEMBER OF 2003 WHICH DROPPED SEVERAL INCHES
OF SNOW IN THE PORTLAND METRO AREA. WHILE THIS KIND OF DETAIL IS
NOT CERTAIN AT THIS POINT...THE SNOW LEVEL AT THE BACK EDGE OF THE
COLD FRONT FRIDAY NIGHT COULD TURN OUT TO BE QUITE LOW.

THE COLD AIR WILL CONTINUE TO STREAM ONSHORE DURING THE DAY
SATURDAY AND ANY SHOWERS WILL LIKELY DROP SNOW TO THE 500 OR 1000
FEET ELEVATIONS. THE ONSHORE FLOW WILL LIKELY LIMIT THE
POSSIBILITY OF THE SNOW REACHING THE VALLEY FLOOR DUE TO A
SIGNIFICANT OVER WATER TRAJECTORY OF THE AIR...AS THE WATER
TEMPERATURES OFF THE COAST REMAIN IN THE LOWER 50S.

IT APPEARS A REINFORCING SHOT OF ARCTIC AIR WILL THEN SPREAD
THROUGH THE GORGE AND DOWN THROUGH WESTERN WASHINGTON INTO
NORTHWEST OREGON SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY...AND BRING THE COLDEST
AIR TO THE REGION IN QUITE SOME TIME. AT THAT POINT...MINIMUM
TEMPERATURES COULD FALL INTO THE TEENS WITH DAYTIME TEMPERATURES
STRUGGLING TO REACH FREEZING. THE POSSIBILITY OF ANY SIGNIFICANT
SNOW ONCE THE MAIN SHOT OF ARCTIC REACHES OUR AREA IS UNCERTAIN AT
THIS TIME AS IT IS DEPENDENT ON WHETHER ANY ORGANIZED SYSTEMS WILL
SPREAD OVER THE AREA...BUT THE POSSIBILITY DOES EXIST.

BE SURE TO TAKE PRECAUTIONS THIS WEEK IN ADVANCE OF THE ARRIVAL OF
THE VERY COLD AIR...SUCH AS WRAPPING PIPES...COVERING FOUNDATION
VENTS...DRAINING OUTDOOR WATER PIPES...AND PROTECTING VULNERABLE
OUTDOOR PLANTS.

Yeah, I saw that on the graph this morning. Haven't ever seen it dip down to sea-level. Pretty crazy if it happens. Just need lots and lots of precipitation!

There's gonna be some strong wind Fri and prob Sat at least at the coast according to NOAA. I'm guessing the Gorge and entire area might get some of that.

I'm not sure if we'll get lots of snow though. Sounds like more cold air and wind. We'd probably need 6 inches minimum for Dallas Mt. to work.

.FRI...W WIND 25 TO 30 KT WITH GUSTS TO 40 KT. COMBINED SEAS
16 FT.
.SAT...NW WIND 20 TO 25 KT WITH GUSTS TO 30 KT. WIND WAVES
6 FT. NW SWELL 18 FT.

HEAVY SNOW IS LIKELY IN THE CASCADES FRIDAY AFTERNOON AS THE COLD
FRONT MOVES IN...THEN CONTINUE HEAVY AT TIMES FRIDAY NIGHT AND A
GOOD PART OF SATURDAY DUE TO STRONG ONSHORE FLOW BEHIND THE COLD
FRONT. AMOUNTS IN THE CASCADES COULD REACH 1 TO 3 FEET THROUGH
SATURDAY.
RATHER STRONG WINDS MAY ACCOMPANY THE SNOW FRIDAY
AFTERNOON AND FRIDAY NIGHT THAT COULD CAUSE AREAS OF BLOWING AND
DRIFTING SNOW.

Today's latest update for Gorge and Valley:

...A BIG CHANGE IN THE WEATHER COMING UP AT THE END OF THE WEEK...

A STRONG COLD FRONT EXPECTED TO MOVE THROUGH FRIDAY AFTERNOON WILL
USHER IN THE COLDEST AIR MASS SO FAR THIS SEASON...THEN A SECOND
COLD FRONT...WITH ARCTIC ORIGINS...IS EXPECTED TO SPREAD EVEN
COLDER AIR IN FROM THE NORTH LATE SUNDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHT.

AT THIS TIME IT APPEARS TEMPERATURES MAY RIVAL THE COLD SNAP OF
JANUARY 2004...WITH LOW TEMPERATURES IN THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY DOWN
TO 15 TO 20 BY SUNDAY AND MONDAY NIGHTS...AND HIGHS STRUGGLING TO
REACH NEAR FREEZING SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY. EVEN COLDER
TEMPERATURES ARE POSSIBLE IN THE UPPER HOOD RIVER VALLEY AND
COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE...WITH LOWS AS LOW AS 10 TO 25...AND DAYTIME
HIGHS JUST 15 TO 25.

THE COLD AIR MASS WILL ALSO BRING A CHANCE FOR LOW ELEVATION SNOW
SHOWERS FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT. SNOW LEVELS...WHICH IS
THE LEVEL AT WHICH STICKING SNOW BECOMES POSSIBLE...MAY DROP AS
LOW AS 1000 FEET AS EARLY AS FRIDAY NIGHT...AND SHOULD BE DOWN TO
THE VALLEY FLOORS BY LATE SUNDAY IN WHATEVER SHOWERS ARE AROUND.
THE POSSIBILITY OF ANY SIGNIFICANT SNOW ONCE THE MAIN SHOT OF
ARCTIC AIR REACHES OUR AREA IS UNCERTAIN AT THIS TIME AS IT IS
DEPENDENT ON WHETHER ANY ORGANIZED SYSTEMS WILL SPREAD OVER THE
AREA...BUT THE POSSIBILITY DOES EXIST.

BE SURE TO TAKE PRECAUTIONS THIS WEEK IN ADVANCE OF THE ARRIVAL OF
THE VERY COLD AIR...SUCH AS WRAPPING PIPES...COVERING FOUNDATION
VENTS...DRAINING OUTDOOR WATER PIPES...AND PROTECTING VULNERABLE
OUTDOOR PLANTS.

Slight change for the coastal waters up north:

.FRI...S WIND 30 TO 35 KT...INCREASING TO SW 40 TO 45 KT IN THE
AFTERNOON. COMBINED SEAS 13 FT. SHOWERS.
.FRI NIGHT...NW WIND 35 TO 45 KT. COMBINED SEAS 23 FT. SHOWERS.
.SAT...NW WIND 25 TO 30 KT WITH GUSTS TO 35 KT. COMBINED SEAS
25 FT.

Break out the pogey's, it's going to be cold. Estuary expression sessions look good for high tide Fri/Sat early morning/late afternoon.

Man, that would be sick. We could backup the snowkiting with some grinching if no Wind.
