Wed Nov 26, 08 4:01 pm Best Odyssey Seeks Chef and Mate/Stew Team In Micronesia |
|
|
Hey All,
The Best Odyssey is currently seeking a Chef and Mate/Stew team to fill the very big shoes of Hannah and Lars, who left after our last trip in Tonga this November. Here’s the run-down:
The boat operates as a time share for a group of owners who are all pretty serious athletes. We very often have professional kiteboarders on board and often work with the media (check out our video link on the website). We have been underway for the past two years, beginning in Italy in 2006 and operating across the Caribbean (2007) and South Pacific (this year). This season we will traverse the Marshall Islands, across Micronesia and much of Southern Indonesia. For details, check out the itinerary.
Our chefs to date (Nico, and Hannah and Lars) have all had extensive culinary backgrounds, including Michelin starred ratings. We’ve been incredibly spoiled and would not be too disappointed to continue! The chef is responsible for all provisioning (often in very remote locations) and preparing 3 high-quality meals per day for up to 11 people, for trips that last 10 to 14 days. It is an enormously demanding position and only dedicated chefs with culinary training will be considered. The Mate/Stew position entails interior and exterior cleaning and service prep for our chef when needed. Typically this entails one full day before and after each trip (there’s 3 guest cabins- you’ve got to be good at making beds!), and about two hours each day maintaining order. Discovery must be kept meticulously clean at all times. We do not operate like a super yacht- no uniforms, no kissing ass. But we run a tight ship and take work and play seriously. We kite, surf, paraglide, dive, spearfish and explore the most remote places on the planet in style. Our owners are part of our family and we're all one big team.
Health insurance/benefits after 3 months, one RT flight home after one year, one month paid time off after one year. Travel to and from the boat negotiable. Salary depends on experience and ability, but chef pay has been $3,000 per month and Mate has been $1500 per month. Tips can be expected and depending on the trip can double this income.
Bonus for any of the following:
Dive master
Master's license, offshore time
non-smoker
kiteboarding instructor
passionate about the environment (ie- it would be preferred to have at least somewhat similar politics- we are not right wing)
If interested, please send picture (compressed), references, CV if available, and brief intro through our contact page.
Applications will not be considered if it is not obvious you have spent some time on our website seeing what it's all about. It's a unique expedition, applicants should also be unique. We are not considering individual applications at this time, unless you are a trained chef.
Thanks and kind regards,
Gavin McClurg

When's dinner ready - I think the chef is out kiting
(could work if there is no eating during daylight hours - maybe we could convert Gavin - perpetual Ramadan )

Hey thanks all for the posts. Spread the word PLEASE. If you recommend a couple that works out great I'll make it worth your while I promise. So hard to find the right combination. Shouldn't be though eh? Killer boat, killer itinerary, lots of kiteboarding. Damn man, where are all the kite couples???

I think the extensive culinary background with star ratings is where you lose most people. Think of how many quality resourceful chefs are out there and how many kiters are out there total. Then throw in the fact that you want a couple that's willing/able to take off and leave everything behind for a while. If you cross all those three requirements you're starting to weed out most people.
Sounds like an awesome trip and adventure though. I'd love to help, but like many others don't have the chef expertise required. Good luck, hope you find the right people.

man you said it. Fair enough- I guess that's why when hiring time comes around Jody and I always think we're screwed. But we've been lucky so far so keep my fingers crossed. Thanks everyone,
Gavin
