I grew up at Va. Beach and Cape Hatteras and this was not an uncommon site. Sometimes they would even shoot out of the water next to us in the line up and scare the poo out of us. I see dolphins here but they seam very shy, has any one seen this kind of thing on this coast?

Haven't so much in Oregon, but I've seen some dolphins playing the waves in Nor Cal.

only seen one or two at a time out here ususally just passing by (have been surfing waves with sea lions - we watched six of them all day down at Neskowin surfing double-overhead waves - they were having fun)

Was fishing off florida on winter break from college came across a school of several hundred dolphins - was other worldly - never seen anything like that since

When we would go sailing on the Chesapeake for vacation they would swim all aroung the boat once the engine was shut off and on the big wake on the front of super tanker there would be schools of them riding that hugh pillow that formed there. I never got tired of seeing it or stopped being amazed by it, it was so cool to see.

yeah, came across a bunch of dolfins in SPI last year doing a downwinder..
scared the shit out of me at first... they def like the waves...

when I said a bunch I meant like 4....

"I was observing a strange interaction between a pair of bottlenose dolphins and a humpback whale, when it became apparent that the two species were collaborating in some way. The dolphin was lying on a humpback whale’s head while it was slowly swimming along. Looking through my camera lens the stunt appeared to be orchestrated by mutual “agreement.” The whale very slowly—and vertically—lifted the dolphin into the air. I expected the dolphin to wriggle atop the humpback’s head to get off, but it just laid still and arched, trying to stay on top of the whale’s snout. In this frame the dolphin was beginning its slippery return to the sea. Once back in the ocean, the dolphin swiftly swam away with the other dolphin, leaping joyfully as if they had just scored a coup!”

That is a dolphin chest bump. had a school all around me at san carlos this year very cool.

Nothing like that shot.. WOW!! That's sick.

Has been quite a bit of dolphin action in SPI this week. Had about 6-8 of them one morning as close as 20 feet away giving us a full on airborne sea world show when we were surfing.

There was a pod of 50+ in the bay super early 2 days ago when the S wind came back strong.. staying upwind at the Jetty's with them all around and again.. enjoying their kicker show.

So much fun to share the stoke!

nice shot. i've been scared by dolphins in the line up, too. i always think its a shark at first.
the scariest thing ive seen in the water was a ray that was about 5' in wingspan that jumped out in front of me. Shocked

In addition to rays I've seen giagantic mantas go bye looking like two big sharks swimming together while out on a romantic dinner date. Once you get use to the sight its great because it clears the line out as the greenhorns go running for shore. Still don't like shark fins though and I never got used to them!!!
