Mon Oct 13, 08 12:33 am Reverse launch? |

| Not sure what the name for this solo launch technique is. Hoping someone can give some pointers. The kite is down wind, leading edge on the ground. Depower then seems to be applied, causing the kite to fly backward off the ground enough to make a sharp turn and right it skyward. Have seen it done on 4 line Cs and hybrids. Any advice appreciated. |

(1) Don't do it.
(2) In high wind, don't even think about doing it.
(3) After you've had about 5 years of kiteboarding, try it in low steady wind, just to see what it is like. It's a pretty cool trick, but by the time you are ready to do it, you will have learned a whole bunch of safer and more reliable ways to self-launch your kite.
(4) See the following posts on the technique for doing the "reverse launch". |

On my Revs, with the leading edge on the ground and the kite straight down wind, I just take a steering line leader in each hand and pull on each line equally until the kite has reversed itself into the air about 10-12'. Then drop one line and it will pretty much turn on its axis. Once the leading edge is facing up again just grab the bar and steer it to the side or top of the window. Its really pretty easy.
Try practicing on a lite wind day 1st. Make sure there's nothing sharp in the sand to drag over and that you have plenty of room to each side and downwind so you don't nail anyone.
(I just read Kitezilla's post and I'd agree with him depending on where you are at. I mostly kite at Sauvies. I don't think I'd try a reverse launch at the sandbar. Too many people and debris. You'd need to try this someplace like an uncrowded day at Sauvies or Jones on a lite day) _________________ Lets FLY |

I'd not try this on the beach if I were you. If you have to ask how, you're not ready.
It's a very useful relaunch technique in the water in very light winds.. If there's not enough wind for a normal relaunch, this works great for getting the kite in the air. I use the same technique FlyDunes describes. |

PM Kevin Kearney, he'll show you how to do it.
Seriously though, you want at least 500 posts before you try this...
The other thing is, you beat the hell out of your kites trying to learn to do it on land. If steez is what your after, I would spend my time unhooking and getting some POP. Last edited by pdxmonkeyboy on Mon Oct 13, 08 10:54 am; edited 1 time in total |

| I wouldn't recommend it unless there is very little wind. However, it is the only way I can lanch my 13M when the wind is VERY lite, so light that it won't come around to the edge of the window to relaunch. It has saved my but a few times while every one else was swiming back to the sand bar. I say learn it from some one who is knowledgeable but know when and when not to use it so you don't hurt yourself really badly. |
