pft, I think this ad is geared more towards a new segment. I'm no fan of hummer cars, but Idon't think this specific ad will draw more people to the sport....most people who don;t know what kiteboarding will not know what the hell is going on.

Now, Phil is saying we need right growth...what could be better than having a lot of people buy gear they NEVER use... Smile I mean the midlife crisis guy who has to prove himself...he'll get full set of gear, and get the first lesson, never to be seen again, yet at the same time he contributes in keeping production numbers up and our prices down Wink

okay I am kidding, although I am not sure if it will be so bad to have more mature people get into the sport, since they are also the ones positioned in different critical decision maker positions around. I'd say it is worse with the kids who DON'T CARE...they just want to be the cool dude the jumps on the beach...we see a lot more of that here Smile

The video ad was expected....our picturesque sport, which seems very adventurous for advertising, but I was surprised to see it singled out in the web marketing...

Wow.

They must've realized that kiteboarding's expensive and are hoping we're stupid enough to buy their shit.

I'd take an ex-military Humvee anyday. those things have such gnarly ground clearance. Ultimate downwinder shuttle rig not to mention you could get pretty much anywhere in one. the new ones are crap.

We looked at the HumVees when the came out
$29k in 1998 for the pickup ,the cheapest of the lot
it had an aluminum body, planetary axle reduction and was miserably uncomfortable ,10 mpg Shocked

While at the Ford/Chevy dealer in Mc Allen 3 years later the HumVees had risen to 130K
while the pos chevy pickup conversions (Hummers)
were close to 50K

Made the Exploder looked economical

Yeah I'm pretty sure the add was geared to people who really won't get into the sport. However, many people will see that add and be drawn to kiteboarding - especially the way in which it is advertised. Look at every time you see someone kiteboarding in an advertisement - I saw an add in subway that featured a kiteboarder - they were trying to sell salads or something - but people get this glamorous image in their head at how cool the sport is and want to try it. I'm all about people trying out kiteboarding - but I'm not about having such crowded spots that its not fun to ride anymore. For example - I generally try and avoid the spit on the weekends? Why? Cus it can be a f*cking zoo at times - too many people - not enough room to ride and try new stuff - and I don't enjoy weaving in between other kiteboarders.

Our sport is growing fast man - look at Sauvie island - you used to be able to go there and get away from the crowds if you were a beginner. Now - no way, now there is a whole line up of new people all up and down the shore, why? Because the sand spit (where people usually go to learn) way too crowded.

Back to the point of advertising and people in the sport - the more people are exposed to this sport the more people are going to want to try it - especially if it is portrayed in a very glamorous light. Look at surfing and what advertising did to surfing. People keep mentioning that kiteboarding will never be as popular as surfing because it costs more. yes, thats probably true. However, kiteboarding doesn't need to be as popular in order for our kiteing spots to become overpopulated.

Take stevenson and say add like 30 people on any given weekend day - what do you get - a zoo. Take any spot (besides the spit) and add like 30 people along the columbia river and you end up with a zoo for the most part. I am excluding the spit because on the weekend it is already a zoo. (I keep harping on the weekends because many of us can only make it out on the weekends).

I'm all for the sport growing and becoming main stream if that is the way this sport is headed - but for god's sake - i want to be able to kite and try new stuff and not have to weave inbetween other kiters.
