Nice how this sport is hitting the commercials. Does anyone know how to self launch like the way they did in this film?

They did what is called a "reverse relaunch". It may look cool on the ad but it can turn ugly real quick....so I would not reccomend learning it.

oversheet the kite, you can actually see it is pretty light wind.

another down wind self launch, put the kite sideways to the wind, run to your bar, take two steps backwards, pull one backline, and the kite wind flip over on its side, and the launch....just remember to NOT have the stopper locked down close to the bar...you need to be able to sheet out..otherwise get ready for a nice beach slide Smile

just be careful, it is pretty easy, but when you try the first times do it in when it is not nuking, and you have room downwind.

Smile

Am I the only one that wishes for LESS exposure for our sport?!?

Not too keen on my favorite launches being packed with 100 kiters.

Yes, I'm selfish. Evil or Very Mad Sue me.

Growth is good, but you need the right kind of growth.

Athletic people bringing skills over from other sports, surfers showing how its done in the waves, kids pushing the limits of freestyle, skaters, wakeboarders, snowboarders, skiiers... all can bring something to the table and progress the sport.

Rich & fat golfer dudes striving for a new way to look cool and brag need not apply. Very Happy

Unfortunately I think the Hummer Ad really hits more the latter segment. Confused

I wonder how many good surf breaks will disappear when the oceans rise.

Considering Hummers are the ultimate off road machines yet all I ever see is super clean shiny hummers that ride around town. I dont think we have to worry about the hummer crowd ever doing anything athletic. At most they will be posers with nice shiny gear that never gets wet.

Monkeyboy, maybe there will be even MORE surfbreaks when the water rises! Wink Wink

Dude - I brought up this topic a couple of years ago.

Check out the following thread.

http://www.nwkite.com/forums/t-3464.html&highlight=commercials

The more advertising pounce on the cool looking aspects of kiteboarding the more crowded our launches will be. I drew an analogy between surfing and movies and kiting. Surfing really became popular after one F*cking movie called gidget or something like that. Then advertisers picked up on it and more and more movies came out about surfing and now you go to most of the surf spots around the world even - and they are crowded. I really hope kiting does not get that way.

Kiteboarding will never have the numbers that surfing is able to produce. Kiteboarding is very difficult for young people to acess due to its high cost. Surfing you can buy a board and wetsuit for $300 and be ready to go.....doubt kiting will ever get that cheep. That is the real problem with our sport right now....groms are what we need to push our sport but its just not going to happen any time soon.

I hear you bro - I just don't want every kiting spot to look like the spit on the weekend. I like having free space to try new stuff and not have to weave inbetween other dudes.

TM, thanks for posting the old link.

Monkeyman, you singing a different tune now? From the old thread....

"In some ways I like that KB is soo expensive. Sometimes people ask me about kiteboarding and my repply is "its expensive, time consuming, and dangerous...but addictive". "

Sure sounds like you're encouraging the next generation!

We have a long way to go to worry about kiting becoming too big and crowded.

We all know kiting is not for everyone and takes dedication to get through the learning curve. I still have "oh shit" thoughts everytime I ride. Some people thrive on that...some don't want anything to do with it. This forum tends to appreciate the "oh shit" thrills in life.

From all the outdoor sports Hummer could have selected it's a message kiting got a small % of exposure. No mtn biking...no kayaking...no windsurfing. Any exposure is good exposure that will drive more sales resulting in better technology, safety, customer service.....etc...and yes more slightly used cheap gear on sale that some Hummer guy posted after getting rag-dolled trying to figure out how to release his safety.

Be careful for what you wish for on both sides Wink

On one hand growth is good -
It wasn't long ago that there were ads with windsurfing - Remember the windsurfing thu the flowers CLARITIN ad?

ON THE OTHER HAND -
Seems like alot of surfers don't even enjoy themselves when they are on the water - Thier faces look like this -> Evil or Very Mad ...Guess that already is part of KBing too tho Confused

I think Chooch is right on. Groms need to come into the sport to push it forward. KBing is expensive. But so is Surfing, Hockey, etc. etc.

OH - and if that Hummer got 30 mpg, I'd consider it Twisted Evil

not sure which part of my post indicates that i'm all excited about the sport becoming popular. The above response is still my stand by. If people are motivated to learn they they will pick it up without me pimping the sport.

Perhaps I should clarify the intent of my original post. IMHO, Hummers are a badge that says I am insecure about myself and need a big expensive truck to bolster my self esteem. They also say, I embrace blatant consumption, don't give too rips about the environment or air quality, and I think all the stuff scientists are saying is a bunch of bullshit. I think if they called hummers the Ego3, they may sell a few more.

Not looking to start another global warming thread, or dependency on foreign oil debate, just trying to clarify my opinion of hummers and the people that drive them.

Exactly. Convincing these midlife crisis ravaged weekend warriors that kiting is easy, safe, and convenient is the best way to keep the Classified section stocked with fresh, tasty, lightly used kit.
