Hey kiteboarding wondermunchkins!

I was wanting a new nickname, that Phil could give me, under me avatar (a most appropriate avatar I might add Laughing ), for this forum.

For those who don't know me, I'm the dude with the 15M foil, 16M Fuel, and crappy recon joke of a relaunch system 20M Nitro.

I'm also what is now labeled an ultra-right wing conservative.

So.......give it your best or worse Shocked shot.

Flydunes had some great ideas, like my fav "Channel Marker" Embarassed .

Phil: take your pick of what you think is the funniest Very Happy

That Recon system does not work as advertised. You have to climb halfway up the dang steering line to release it. My hands are fried. I'm going to throw a 5th line on it.

Why did I have to self-rescue yesterday?
I'm not used to using the 20M, and I like to pull kites out of stalls by pulling on the front lines. They placed their kite depower release right where I normally pull, and I released the kite. I reloaded the safety, then proceeded to work the blasted Recon, then just about when I had it flying, a front line snapped.

Man, this summer has been a comedy of errors. My son told me, last night, "Dad, now you don't have to worry when you go out on the water. Almost any bad thing that can happen, has already happened to you, and you know you'll be O.K. no matter what happens Rolling Eyes .

Haha, Phil told me that one. My proposal was "buoy". Phil had some other good ones too, but it looks like Channel Marker stuck.

Dude, you've spent more time bobbing around in the water recently than everyone else combined! Maybe you need to invent a 3rd alternative to foils and LEIs. Razz

Ha I love the channel marker name Laughing

You should consider buying a newer smaller kite I think you would have alot more fun. I rode an 11m the whole time yesterday. You dont need a 20m they are too big, move slow and are really hard to relaunch.

I've been stuck out there probably as much as anybody, especially my first couple years of learning. Always on big 2003-2005 era C kites. It was funny seeing you out there last night it was like looking into the past a few years, it used to be much more common.

It all changed when modern kites came out that just relaunch easily. 5th lines are okay but even some newer C kites can relaunch now as easily as the bows (without a 5th line.)

Looks like it's time to upgrade, huh?

I tend to hold onto my old stuff, because I rarely have the budget for new. Very difficult with a fam of five on one income, if you know what I mean.

But I look forward to the newer stuff, for obvious reasons.

The relaunch on the foil is excellent, as long as I don't invert or twist. I mean LE down or TE down, relaunch is in seconds! But those dadburnt twisties I HATE!

Anyway thanks for the info Bettster and Philmiester. I can't wait to get one of the new badbouys (a nickname I thought of) Very Happy

The year that the Bow kites came in (2005), a whole bunch of us worked on the problem of converting the Recon kites over to a system with a decent safety system. We all came to the same conclusion...it is not worth it. The kites would need an expensive make-over. The fifth line would have to be attached to a well sew and reinforced patch, since, I believe the kites did not even have that new invention, the "pump leash", back then, and the fabric wasn't that strong either. The other big problem was the conversion and re-sewing needed at the wingtips. The kites had a huge hollow batten, with the stopper "bullets", and the front lines attached to the rear lines, all of which had either stickage or wear problems.

We were kind of heart-broken since the kites themselves, especially the big ones, like the 17M and 20M were great low wind kites.

Probably, for the price of the conversion, you can pick up an old 06 20M Waroo...a great low wind kite.

I would caution you to beware of just "throwing a 5th line on it".

Hey CM! (Channel Marker... Very Happy )

If you're going to convert, you'll need a reinforced pump leash, and pigtail points sewn onto the wingtips. It's doable, but if you've not any experience with doing this you'll need a pro like Airtime to do it. None of these are points that you'll want to fail. Plus, you'll need a new bar. In the end, it's probably cheaper to buy a newer kite...

If you trust your sewing and modification skills you can do it yourself. But be REALLY certain of those skills before you fly your modded kite. And make sure you "torture" test the kite while it's anchored to something like a truck before you fly it yourself. I've modded kites, and the results aren't always what you intended.

God, there are so many nicknames floating in my head I am dizzy. Hard to beat channel marker. But I have to chime it, simply because, well you know, I'm somewhat of a smartass.

1. Captain Foil
2. The man who couldn't take advice
3. Boldly floating where no man has floated before
4. Pushing the envelope, one swim at a time
5. My way or the right way
6: and my favorite.... Flotsam. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marine_debris
