thought i would start a new thread stemming from the keep an eye out thread.

As many of us keep our kites and what not in rocket boxes, etc I thought I would share the fact that the locks that come with these units are NOT secure at all. I left my thule box keys at home when I arrived at Stevie. Well, I HAD to get my stuff from the box so crammed a screwdriver in the key hole and gave it a twist.

It turned sooo easy it was a joke really. I was like WTF, I thought these things were secure. I devised a fix but it is a little labor intensive.

The lock core is held in place by a thin piece of aluminum that slides in a groove in the lock cylinder; when you twist the core, it just bends.

I took this aluminum piece out (held in place by a single rivet) and then replaced it with a piece of 1/8" thick steel stock. You can use the aluminum piece as a template as there is a bend in it to facilitate lining up with the groove in the lock cylinder that the plate slides into.

Once it was in place I secured it with two rivets. You CAN NOT turn my lock cylinder with a screwdriver now. Maybe a mini crow bar or something but like someone said, if they are really determined, its a lost cause.

I can post pics if someone is really that interested.

I'd be interested if you could post a picture of the mod.

Thanks!
