What is good for "safekeeping"? Boxes are easy to break. Canopies are easy break. Cars are easy to break. Houses are easy to break. Any normal window is easy to break. A determined thief can rip pretty much anything in seconds.

Under what circumstances is it cool to indickate that the victim had it coming or deserved a loss because they exercised insufficient precaution to discourage theft?

I can't think of many.

Just looking through a few threads, seems there is a lot of theft going on in your community. Might I suggest to be cautious when posting your personal photos of your equipment, cars, person and when and where you will be at any given time.

The one guy who started the, "Sue", thread surely appeared aggravated. Insane or just mad as hell, had he wanted to find a few of those here who were exchanging words with him, he could have found you or followed you to find your stuff.

I have logged on to read posts, finding on the front page there are often a couple dozen, unregistered viewers reading as well.

Be careful out there. There are dangerous people and sometimes the least they want is your gear.

I agree a determined thief will break through what he wants.

While I am sure many will not agree with my take on this, but I found great satisfaction forcing a scumbag to lay in the middle of the street when I found him trying to steal my bikes until the cops arrived and arrested him on a warrant he already had outstanding.

Still have not had the justification to Taser a scumbag yet but I am optimistic I will get the oppurtunity sooner or later.

Anyway, be sure to take the high road and only use the minimum force necesarry to secure the situation and no revenge.

In Oregon Citizen Arrest is Legal.

133.225 - Arrest by a private person
(1) A private person may arrest another person for any crime committed in the presence of the private person if the private person has probable cause to believe the arrested person committed the crime. A private person making such an arrest shall, without unnecessary delay, take the arrested person before a magistrate or deliver the arrested person to a peace officer.

(2) In order to make the arrest a private person may use physical force as is justifiable under ORS 161.255.

161.255 - Use of physical force by private person making citizen's arrest
(1) Except as provided in subsection (2) of this section, a private person acting on the person's own account is justified in using physical force upon another person when and to the extent that the person reasonably believes it necessary to make an arrest or to prevent the escape from custody of an arrested person whom the person has arrested under ORS 133.225.

(2) A private person acting under the circumstances prescribed in subsection (1) of this section is justified in using deadly physical force only when the person reasonably believes it necessary for self-defense or to defend a third person from what the person reasonably believes to be the use or imminent use of deadly physical force.
