I'm officially booked for my NC trip for Sept 11-24. Anyone going to be out there? I'll be mostly in Wilmington at Wrightsville Beach but am already considering a flight change to head to Hatteras for a bit before coming home..
So my questions: whats the wind like out there this time of year? I currently run with a 7/9 Rev quiver. Thinking I may need an 11. Anyone got expert opinions here? Also, I was going to take my SS SX 136 only. Do I need a surfboard?
Also - if I run up to Hatteras, where do y'all normally stay there? Camp? Hotel? Cabins? What do you recommend for a solo traveler?
I'm sure I'll figure most of this out on-site, but the kite size recommendations would be great.
THX!

Don't Speed down there, the cops are relentless and everywhere. I grew up down there and it took me years to realize how mellow cop are on the west coast, even Hood River cops, relatively.
Have fun. |

Jeri,
Trevor used to go there all the time on "work trips". He probably has some good tips on places to stay, ect.... |

I second the part regarding the cops. On my way to the outer banks is the only time I've ever received a speeding ticket. They're relentless.
As for kite sizes, I would recommend taking something larger than your 9. I would take an 11, if not a 13.
The wind's good, but not as strong as the gorge. |

I would pack 2 kites: A "sauvie's kite" and 1 kite that you would ride in 20-25mph. Which is probably your 9m and 7m. I've only been there once where I needed my 7m, the water is nice and flat so being overpowered is not as big of deal.
Plus if the 9m is small for the day, just do downwinders. You can always find someone to shuttle.
The outer banks waves are small, more of a beach break most the time unless a storm is near by, so I would not bring your surfboard. There are a ton of surf shops, so if waves are good just go rent one. Real kiteboard also rents their boards last time I was there.
I know in hatteras area there are camping spots, and it should be warm enough. Hotel is probably your best bet for non-camping just don't remember too many hotels in the area near the main kite beach but I'm sure there are.
I have not had good experience with the REAL KB housing there, but they offer rooms for cheap. If you do REAL housing don't get the Bunk house, as they have a huge mosquito issue, your shower is outdoors, bathroom is an outhouse, and you have no sink. Get a room at one of their houses.
Forecasts aren't very good unless they are predicting SW wind. Which tend to be spot on. Everything else will change at any time. Anything wind with East in it will give you super flat water but tends to be on the lighter side and more punchy.
Don't plan on launching from the REAL KB facilities as they don't like non-lesson people there.
It is one of my favorite places ride if I'm in the area.
Have a good trip! |
