Yes, south dwer's can and have been done. I would just be careful of getting too close to the jetty as those rocks are hard and south/SW winds TEND to be gustier and less consistent than the N/NW winds. That is not saying there can't be silky and consistent S/SW wind, but it is less prevalent. I also believe that with S/SW winds, that the currents change, making the water warmer. . .but this also can create some nasty currents right at the south Jetty (that applies to all the jetties on the OR coast). My point is don't get too close to those jetties.

Have fun and be safe! Cool Very Happy

Come on dude. . .

look at the sensors, there appears to be ample south/sw winds up and down the coast. I heard of S/SW sailing down at Newport (never done it), Cannon Beach (never done it), Seaside, Seaside to Del Ray and or Sunset beach (done it all). Have never had to travel that far North for South wind. . .the world is your oyster. . .now shuck it, throw some lemon juice and Tabasco sauce on it and hit the lip! Very Happy

I think in the S, SW your just as good starting at Seaside or Gearhart...no reason to go up to Ft. Stevens unless that's closer for you.

It's cranking right now in Seaside with periodic rain squalls. The hope is that the squalls pass and the wind stays strong but steadies out...then it's time to pounce!

I heard Cannon could be pretty good out of the south.

Yesterday, Seaside was good, not great...still alot of south in it and the swell hadn't arrived yet...today could be great if it calms down a little...

Beware that southerlies can die or pick up suddenly, and the swell's more likely to pick up as the storm front moves in. There will be strong currents out of the south, so like Sasquatch said, be sure to stay away from any downwind obstacles.

Make sure you go through your pre-flight checklist first!

Quote:
1. check my leash and release it and reload.
2. check my chicken loop and release it and reload.
3. feel my knife and know where it is.
4. check my harness release(mission waist release)
5. Walk my lines
6. Double check my kite selection. I ask Eric if he's around, or somebody I know who know's the wind.

7. I always pray before I go out. "God please watch me and make sure I don't get hurt."

If you look at any nautical chart worth 2 cents, it will have a disclaimer stating that they believe that the readings are true and accurate, however, it is not a guarantee, and conditions/readings may change without warning. That being said, I cannot tell how close to get to the jetty before it becomes dangerous as conditions are changing all the time. But try to think/visualize this: S/SW winds, creating south current and movement of water from South to North. As the water gets closer to an obstacle, such the south jetty at the mouth of the Columbia aka Fort Stevens, the current will hit the jetty and the water will have to go somewhere; back eddies and rip currents are formed, draining ocean water out to sea, where there are no impediments. . .

I believe this is the affect. . .So that is not to say one can't sail in these areas, but basically your playing with fire and you might get burned or in this case, if something goes wrong while sailing and your kite goes down, you'll probably be headed out towards the open ocean. (another instance BLUAE99 where your sh*t isn't coming back, no matter how much faith you have). And of course there is always the upwind of a dangerous/hard obstacle with gusty winds factor to think about. . .

I'm sure Mocean knows way more about this then I, as do many others. Anyone want to chime in?

Aaron and I did it one last November or December in Newport. 3 miles from the lighthouse to Otter rock on the Pre-hurricane buildup the afternoon before the 100mph+ winds ripped through the coast. It was fun Very Happy

Slither and Gman hitching to those October like southerlies!
Right on.
I was surfing offshores at the cove and wondering if anyone was snatching that wind.

We usually do the Gearhart flag entrance to the shipwreck.

Can be gusty. No biggie.
Surf was too good to go kiting.
Good swell this week!
