Mon Aug 11, 08 10:41 am SS REV 15m Quiver help |
|
|
Looking at qetting a quiver of SS Revs.
I'm 185 and kite in light wind (10-13mph) a lot, so for sure was going to get a 15m Rev. How do you like your 15m Revs?
I get to Los Barriles in Baja a few times each year, where a 9m Crossbow has been fine for my smallest kite. Does the 9m Rev handle similiar wind to a Crossbow 9?
So what do I need to get in-between the 15m and the 9m. A 12m would be perfect, I like 3 meters between kites, but alas a 12m is not available.
Do I go 15, 11, 9
Or 15, 13, 9
Any advice would be appreciated... |

I've been pretty pumped on my 15 and 135 lunacy > sub 10-13knots. Lots of power in the kite and killer edge to keep up wind on those nasty light east wind days. Also the 15 is a killer snow kite for those epic light wind days on the ridge.
The 9,11,15 combo sounds good. |

My 15M rev kicks ass when its super light / barely rideable, but the 13M is more fun as soon as it hits the teens. I probably use my 13M more than any of my other Revs.
I'm 160 lbs, a beginner, and I usually ride a lunacy 132 and a recoil 136. I've got a Jimmy Lewis flight deck too, but I usually only pull that out if the conditions are really grim. The lunacy planes almost as good as the flight deck.
I'm planning on trying to kite with a skim my next few sessions coz I really need to get some crash and recovery practice. And so that Monkey Boy isn't disgusted with my lack of smack time _________________ Lets FLY |

For guys your weight, I normally recommend the 13/9. Here in the Gorge, it'll cover you for most everything except ultra-light wind like you're looking to ride...
As I've said before, the REV 15's turning is comparable to my old '07, FUEL 13, so it really isn't all that bad for such a big kite. Low-end wise, it does take some kite speed to generate power, unlike the T2 14.
For me at 145lbs, my REV 11 is rideable (on a Lunacy twin-tip) from ~15-25. Then I'll normally switch to the 9 if it's ~25+ (up until ~30 - beyond that it's time for the 7).
Really depends on what you're going to be riding most. If there are some days that pick up into the upper teens/low 20s, I'd definately go for the 15/11/9. The 13 does offer a bit more low-end, but turns considerably slower. |

| At 210 lbs., the ideal REV quiver for me has been 7, 9, and 13. My buddy went with a 7, 11, and 15 and now says he wished he'd gone 7, 9, 13. We've found that there isn't that much difference in power between the 13 and 15 except when the wind's just a hair lighter and I can't stay to windward and he can. That's happened only one time though. Using a better light wind board + the 13 would cover the really light wind speeds. The REV's have so much range! My most used kite here on the coast is the 9M by far. |

I'm in the 210lbs range and my experience with the kites is exactly the same as Mocean's comments.
The 15 is a larger kite, but the 13 is the 'money' kite for lightwinds and still is comfortable into the low 20's.
The 7,9and13 quiver has been our best seller at 2nd Wind, either that or just going with the standard 7 and 11 quiver.

13 / 9
My 13 Rev with the right board can go VERY lite wind and I'm your same weight.
I've flown the 15 Rev and it's a slow turning boat IMO. Although I'm usually on a 9 or 11 so ANY 15 feels slow to me.
Speed is power so I believe I can generate 15+ type out of my 13 based on turning efficiency and if the winds pick-up I like the comfort of knowing I can trim in to something manageable if I need to self-land etc.
When in doubt...demo them all. |

| I have the 5,7,9,11, and 13 since both Janet and I kite and she is usually one size down from me. I rarely even need to ride the 13 if I want to ride a big board. the 11m is a sweet kite and a great all around kite. I would definitely not get a kite biger than a 13 for the Revs and I am 200+ pounds. |

For me (190lbs) the Rev 13 did not do as my big kite on the Northern Beaches. Mocean, I think you're Newport based?...and so you may not bother with as much low-teen stuff and we do.
I expected it to put me on the same power level as my friends with 15m & 17m Fuels but it didn't seem to. (I ride all kinds of boards...really big ones when needed). It turned pretty good but definately feels like a big kite.
I debated between the 15M Rev and the 14M T3 and went with the T3 because it's advertised as having more power in light winds. I would love to try them side by side but I think I am happy I went for max power.
For the Gorge or more windy beaches down south I am sure the 13M is adequate and the Rev's sure turn well if you like a turny kite. |

Just rode my 15m Rev this afternoon at Beverly Beach and it worked great in powered up 20 knot conditions. I probably could have been on my 11m, but the range of the Revs never ceases to amaze me and it felt good to hang on to a bunch of power. The Rev kites rock, and any size is a good kite, but when comparing my kiting to Mocean who is my kiting partner he can consistently ride his 9m when I am on my 11m, and he does just fine on his 13m when I am on my 15m. There is that lowest bottom end that can't be ridden on a 13m when a 15m will still generate power and stay upwind, but it is a small slice of windspeed. For the Newport area I believe the ideal Rev quiver is 7,9, and 13m. However, if you are looking for a good lightwind kite the Rev 15m is a great kite. All my kites will be up for sale in another month or so, if you want 7, 11, or 15m let me know.

Yo, Yo,
I just blew up my 15 M Rev in the Gorge 2day.......was having a blast with the kite and have held down some crazy wind with it back home.....50km+, 160lbs.
I would recomend the 11M or the 13M Rev's.....both awesome, buy the 11 is that much faster.....
Ended up finnishing 2days session on the 11M Rev and Glide....wow what another awesome day in the Gorge.

Why not get four preformance items out of your quiver.
1) Great Value,
2) Sweet all around Kite (does everything well)
3) HUGE WIND RANGE,
4) GREAT LOW END
This best way to save some cash and get the biggest bang for your buck, is the Slingshot T3. Its kinda of like friends with bennifits, I just doesnt get any better than the Slingshot T3 for what you are looking for.
Dude you could go like 9, 14, or maybe 11,16
The T3 IS THE BEST KITE YOU NEVER BOUGHT!!!!!
Oh, did if forget to mention that there on SALE right now? |

Danger, sorry but the wind snob 'tude is SO tired. I could kind of see it when you're living in the Gorge where it blows almost every day and the terrain is mostly chop. But when you're looking out at some nice waves that are barely disrupted by the light winds you're going to want to rig whatever it takes to get you out there.
Also, for the weekender who dedicates a day to find wind is not going to want to sit there playing cards and watch people mow on big kites and let the session go by.

I rode one at ss in light cloudy gorge conditions and it flys like dream.
It's fast and solid. Down loops great for surfboard conditions in less the 15knots.
If you have any consistent light wind and you want to be powered up get it! _________________ Hey, I'm being hahahahahrassed! |
