It seems the entire summer went by without my being able to get some water time in. I'm still a newb and was wondering if RR is a good place for me to get some teabagging in. Since the wind and the water are both going the same direction, would I end up in Troutdale or is it pretty newb friendly? Are there better times to be there than others? Like when it's not nuking........

As long as the wind is not nuking or super gusty, RR is a great beginner spot. Just make sure you hike a ways east so that you have a bit of breathing space. Make sure you get back to shore before you run out of beach to land on. When the wind drops off in the afternoon it can drop to zero pretty quick, but it can also stabilize in the low teens for an hour or two. Know how to reverse relaunch your kite; sometimes that's the only way to get it back in the air when the wind gets real light. Waist deep water is the best place to practice that. Right now the East half of RR has tons of waist deep water!  But remember, beware the dreaded VS.  |

Captain America and his posse would love to give you a few lessons on tea bagging.
Rooster is also good for newbies to body drag in the waist to chest deep shallows, but like Nak said, best to do it when not so gusty and or lighter.
Go in the late afternoon aka high tea at 4pm; get your tea bagging on then head out for some body dragging in the shallows. |

| My wife and I came across VS this last Saturday. At the time I was unaware of VS... Is there an easier way to get down to the beach at rooster? We walked east which is where the VS encounters occurred; I was ignorant of the dangers of walking east at rooster. |

I took a beginner to Rooster yesterday... what a waste of time... makes you appreciate the West wind in the Gorge.
I had not been there for a few years, and all of a sudden, I remembered something about the LOWER wind situation at Rooster. From the parking lot, the river looks great for a 12 M kite...little whitecaps, etc... So then, you walk and walk and walk about half way along the island, and then, the wind feels perfect....ALL RIGHT! you say...we lucked out...perfect for a beginner! So you rig and launch the kite and for about 10 seconds, the wind is perfect...and THEN... you hit the first of the GIANT LULLS... HOLES THAT LAST 40 SECONDS...the kite falls into the water and then, you notice that you are drifting toward the kite, with no hope of relaunching it.
The answer to this problem of low wind at Rooster, is to not only walk and walk and walk, but walk and walk and walk and walk and walk some more, until you are at the east end of the island. Yesterday, the guys that did that got about 45 minutes more of decent kiting than the guys that only walked half way around the island.
High wind at Rooster is for advanced kiters only, and it is very gusty, but at least you get to kite for a while....then, when the wind starts to die...watch out, because the way the wind dies, at Rooster, is "Death, by giant lulls and remaining gusts". The current makes you drift toward your kite, and the lines goes slack... and then POW the gust rips the kite off the water.
That's Rooster for you... with the big sand beach, it sure looks like the perfect place to kite, but... |

| Yeah you're right Rooster sucks. I wouldn't go there. If you could take the other 75 kites on the water last Saturday with you that would be great too. I'll make sure and hold that sucky ass place down all by myself. I mean, it's really gonna suck ass but somebody's gotta do it... |

| Yesterday wasn't great for wind at the rock, but there are some great days. When the RR sensor is showing West and it's Easterly elsewhere, the transition zone is going to suck. The best RR Easterlies are on uniformly sunny days from Stevenson to PDX, and steady Easterlies showing on all sensors from Skamania to Troutdale. |

At times... but only at times. The purpose of my post was to help out a beginner kiter. Sorry, vancougar, if you thought I was slamming the Rooster.
In the last 20 years, I have had some great times there. Check out the old Oceanic video by Dave Russel of Rushwind Sails to see the "soul" of Rooster... "the heart of the monster", so to speak. Bill Klein named it "BIG EAST" in 1987. On the big days it is not for the faint of heart... I don't care how small your kite is.
No site in the Gorge sucks all the time or is awesome all the time. People like Nak know the difference...you can profit by following his advice on the nature of the west end of the Gorge, with east or west wind. |

sure, there are days when RR is blowing east, and troutdale is blowing nothing or even light west. those are not going to be the best of days at RR. when it's raging, and blowing all the way through = great days.
once a friend riding on the east wind went downwind toward the parking lots, kite plops in the water. 2 minutes later, he relaunched his kite on the incoming WEST wind. not enough wind to ride, but people were still riding the east wind at the east end of RR. |
