Just arrived in Maui today. Could see the kites from the plane as we landed. Perfect 9m wind, warm and oh, did I mention sunny? Maui at her finest. Was too busy kiting to take any good pics-- snapped these two with my phone. Will post some real ones tomorrow--

Good deal Garret! I flew into Honolulu today from Tokyo. Went over to Kailua and watched the winds sit at 9 all day too. 9 mph, not 9m. Sad Glad you're getting some over there! I get back here again Monday; Windfinder is looking pretty good so far for Monday & Tuesday. Probably will nuke over there!

Any west swell? Go to Hawaiian Island and ask for Aki, get an 8-6 3 fin and swim go to paia bay by baldwin park and learn to do a bottom turn.

Then head over to Makena and hit big and little beach!

Today was a little lighter- but had a full day on the 11m. No whales yet, but lots of turtles. Scott took his first lesson and unlike me, didn't end up by the cruise ships Very Happy
LF was doing a photo shoot and Shawn Richmond showed up in the afternoon. Tried to get a good picture of him, but he must not have seen the camera-- usually you can't keep those guys away when there is one around Laughing

Well so far has been 3 for 3.... well actually the 3 was the size of the kite we flew. Light winds, but a trainer kite counts right? Hit the Bamboo jungle, got lost for a little in the Gman short cut. They installed a nice ladder to get the the upper pools. Did some snorkeling in the bay-- saw a sea cucumber or two and then finished with a massage from Hilda-- thanks Toby- you da man for having her number. Sometimes a no wind day is good... did I just say that on the NW kite forum?

so you can kite little beach? isn't that the nudie bar?
I am heading down in april and staying down near there. I haven't seen that much wind down there. Can you launch anywhere? (I was under the impression that Maui had some restrictions). Also, found some wind in Kihei, but not a lot of good launches... where is it? I was trying to avoid having to drive all the way up to the airport, but will if I have to. I can bike to Kihei, and swim to little beach.

help please!

PS. How's the wind in April? Knowing my luck, it'll be for sheet.

Most of the best wind is on the north shore. You can check out the Maui Kiteboarding Association web page-- they have a good map as the answer to your question is that no, you can't kite from anywhere. http://www.mauikiteboardingassociation.com/kitemaps.html

There is a good map on this page. You can kite on the south side by Kihei, but that is only when there are Kona winds- from the south. Otherwise I would try to stay near the airport. But I am sure there are others who could give you more advice-- but that is my experience--

So what is the deal with the wind in Maui? Was out for a short last session at 1pm before my flight home and the wind totally shut down.... kite got maytaged in the breakers, popped a valve and I ended up having to ditch it or I would still be swimming in Sad Seems like this happened before.... And I realize that kiting is an individaul sport, but the people on the SUP's paddeling around could have offered a little help... might have saved my kite from the reef--
