Blah!... the current was so strong going UP river that even Kelton at 130 lbs was underpowered on an 11m, and even Drew couldn't stay up wind on a 12m and his plank. Really strange conditions.
AHA! I was wondering why it was so hard to stay upwind. Pretty fun evening overall though.

are you saying that the current was going east? or just west, but weakly?
yeah it did seem windy (white caps) but looked hard to stay wind...

Seriously, it felt like the current was actually flowing toward portland! At one point Drew threw his board in and it did start moving up river at about 3mph! I'm sure the wind was contributing, but it was really strange to see his board floating up river....

Tides can reverse the current once the snowmelt backs off. I'm pretty sure this happens later in the season on a regular basis.

So with tides having an effect on the conditions at SI. How much of a delay is there between high tide at the ocean and high tide at SI?

When they fix a link you will be able to look it up here:

Here's the NWS link for Columbia River tides at St.Helens:

http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/get_predictions.shtml?year=2008&stn=1038+Astoria&secstn=Saint+Helens,+Oreg.&thh=%2B3&thm=31&tlh=%2B5&tlm=44&hh=*0.0&hl=*0.0&footnote=wc5

The problem is that according to that chart, high tide last night was supposed to have been at 6:08PM. That's about what time we arrived and it was still crummy at 7pm.

The DEQ wind station lags ~2hrs in the readout compared to the actual wind. It is a good indication that the wind is blowing through the Island, but that's about it unless it is blowing all day…

If anybody has a hand-held anemometer we could figure out the difference between what it reports and what the wind up at the kite beach actually is. With enough data we could apply a correction factor to the wind readout at www.windonthewater.com

I think you really want the Knapp Landing tide table as the lag is long inland and St. Helens is too North.

http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/get_predictions.shtml?year=2008&stn=1038+Astoria&secstn=Knapp+Landing,+Wash.&thh=%2B4&thm=26&tlh=%2B6&tlm=28&hh=%20*%200.0&hl=*0.0&footnote=wc5

Hmm, asterisks must be reserved as as they's uckin up my url program.

Maybe go here http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/tides08/tab2wc1b.html and click Knapp Landing link the old fashioned way.

Yes, the water moves "backward" as the snowmelt dies down during summer and will kill a marginal wind. Of course as the tide goes it you get help for a weak Northerly.
