Loaded across the gate, they're only worth 7 kilo-newtons (1575lbs of force). You wouldn't need to fall very far from some kind of maneuver gone wrong to generate that. I'm just curious why there isn't a second one, opposite and opposed. They only weigh like 100 grams. There are some pretty stringent shock loading tests they have to pass. PG biners are pretty spendy/beefy. The rating on PG biners is typically higher than 7KN (look at the rating on the one in the horror pic below). I did see an announcement through USHPA about a biner recall once, but what's more likely is people not closing their biners properly !
