Right on Scott!
I'm wondering about that Patagonia wetsuit. I have a R2 suit that I use spring & fall kiting the Gorge and at the coast for summer kiting. I use a 5/4/3 for surfing though. Which suit are you using for winter time surfing. I am considering the R3 front zip with hood as I think the R4 may be a bit TOO toasty. Less rubber = more comfort and mobility. Any feedback would be great! |

Definitely go with the R3 with the hood...front zip.
The R4 is overkill if you really want to sweat....so the R3 will give you way more flexibility.
I wore the R3 when it was snowing.
I put a thin merino wool shirt on (Patagonia) underneath.
I was totally warm.
Warm booties are the biggest factor.
And a thin pair of gloves...like 2mm.
The technology of this stuff is amazing these days. _________________ SPACESTICK

Thanks Scott. I thought that the 4 mil would be too much. Folks who saw me kiting the coast in a 2 mil were shocked and amazed. I was too the first time I tried it. I was kiting Rufus in that thing in early May when guys with drysuits were on the water. Props to Patagonia, those suits are magic. Thanks for the advice, I will see Josh about the 3 mil... |

"Gillnetted Youngs Bay for salmon for 8 hours.
Caught 50 salmon."
Dude, I gotta ask. Everybody has a right to make a living, but why post this here?
You gotta know it is a touchy subject in OR/WA and I for one don't really want to read about it. This isn't the place for the debate.
Thanks
Otherwise, glad to hear you how stoked you are about Oregon! |

I don't even know what that means; but, I do know that 50 salmon won't fit in my Big Chief.

Argos,
Thanks but it's not really a touchy subject because I am gillnetting in Youngs Bay which is a terminal area---also called a SAFE area.
This means that all the fish we catch are hatchery fish which are bred for the purpose of commercial catch.
10% of our commercial profits go to the hatcheries that breed these fish....to make more.
It's a beautiful thing. Totally sustainable and a great natural resource in Oregon.
There really isn't any controversy in terminal fisheries.
But I see your point. _________________ SPACESTICK

Thanks Scott,
As an old fisherman told me recently, what most people don't know about the commercial fishing industry is amazing.
I guess I am one of them, and I appreciate the information. Unfourtuantley, the word gillnet still seems like a bad word.
If I get a chance later, I am going to try and take a look at your website, but at a glance it was tough to find a quick easy message. I suppose that is because it is a complex issue and not summarized in a few easy sentences. |
