After a major tune up it almost gets 10 miles per gallon.
Is that a 5.4 liter V8 in your rig Drew?
Anyone know where to get estimates for RV mpg ? I've been looking for a small class C like Drews .
Hey Chris,
Not sure about the engine size in liters. I know it is a 350. Honestly, 10 MPG is a bit of a stretch. In my years of owning campers, I've found that everyone lies about their mileage. With these older rigs, I don't think there is any reliable way to research MPG. A good piece of the puzzle is how you drive and the condition of the engine along with all the components.
Bottom line is if you are going to commit to owning an old, heavy camper, you've got to be prepared to dish out some cash. The other day I kissed a curb at 20 miles an hour and it cost $188 for a new tire. I just smile and break out the plastic.
Hey Drew, how much of your gas mileage is affected by how much water you are carrying (I assume you have a bathroom and shower in that bad boy)? _________________ Still rockin gojos, *ssless chaps, and ankle weights!

I'd be more worried about stopping while carrying all that water.
Don't tailgate with an RV.
gas = ~6lb/gal
water = ~8lb/gal
pull through a weigh station to check your weight.
Compare to rated capacity.
Many RVs are grossly over loaded.
Careful with tires on RVs that have been sitting for over 5 years.
I had a perfectly good looking tire blow on my 32 ft Class A at 70 mph
That was a ride. Sold it after that.

Hey if anyone really wants a opportunity at a ambulance. My dept has one thats going up for sale, its a 1992, but has a spanking brand new 7.3 in it.
super cheap, motor worth way more than the rig itself. Infact, we'll let you buy the engine for 3700, but the deal is that you have to take the unit with ya! comes with lights!

More weight = worse mileage.
full gas tank = 35 gal
full fresh water tank = 35 gal
full grey & black water tank = 35 gal
Throw in wife, kid and a shit ton of gear and you've increased the vehicle weight by 10%. I think there must be baffles in the water tanks because I can't feel anything slosh around when loaded up. Heavy duty air bags and torsion bars help a bunch. My rig actually drives smoother when loaded up.
Breaking is always an issue. No tailgating and no day dreaming.

Wow that's a nice sunrader...I was orginally looking for one of those and they are super hard to find.
I passed a few dolphins coming back from the coast those are pretty sweet for gas mileage too. _________________ Join the CGKA! Membership is only $10! Sign up at http://cgka.net/become-a-member/

Yeah good sunraders are harder and harder to find, especially the shorty 18 footers like mine, took me 2 years of searching to find it. Most are 21'. They really are the best Toyota RVs out there due to their 2 piece fiberglass construction. They have some design flaws, but as long as you find a decent example, they are easily fixed and will run forever. Forest is right, that 22r is bomber. I have the RV cam in mine and it does just fine. May convert it to diesel though someday.
I wouldn't buy that one listed on idaho CL due to its auto tranny--you really need the stick with the 4 banger, it's useless in the hills/mtns with the auto and the tranny can overheat.
The auto is fine with the 6 cyl versions though. The holy grail of sunraders to me (besides the ultra rare 4x4 version) is the 18' 6 cyl one--a very few of which even came with manual trannies!
The other crucial thing on older toyota RVs is that they have the 1 ton dually full floater rear axle. Some have the dually, but it is not a full floater. This is absolutely crucial--if it's not the 1 ton axle, the wheels can fall off due to the weight!
Read the whole thread. Even if you don't have the time/expertise/ducats to do close to what that guy did, there are some great ideas that you could incorporate into your rig. Good luck!
