Sounds like your best starting point would be to make friends with Robin and the crew at Urban Surf. Familiarize yourself with the product lines that they sell (probably want to be also riding on the same gear they sell). Next, be available when opportunities arise to either help Urban Surf with demo/promo events, or just be helpful and friendly to beginners who show up at your local beach.
Shop owners/managers know when someone is helping direct new customer traffic their way. It's not how good you are on the water, it is how good you are off the water and on the beach.
As for our shop, teamriders(or as like to call them "shop ambassadors") are discovered by their taking that extra 5 min of personal time on the beach to help launch/land a person, give (polite) local advice, or just by being friendly and helpful on a daily basis, and recommending our shop for product or repair assistance.
Our best and most valued teamriders aren't exactly the best, legit riders on the water, but they are the ones most ready to help out with set up and breakdown at events, pumping kites up with out a bitch or moan, and always thinking of others needs before their own before, during or after one of our events.
We are also truly lucky enough to have some of the most bad-assed kiters in the Gorge, but we are even more lucky to have their loyalty and friendship first and foremost.
Just some food for thought for you to consider.

Thanks Pepi,
btw 2nd Wind has always been my favorite shop in the gorge. I bought my first kite from the pile of used gear you guys sell. Its always so much fun looking for a good deal in amongst all the consignment gear  I try and always make it a point of stopping in there every time I'm at the gorge, even if I don't find time to go to any of the other shops.

Sounds like you are working that Kneepads angle pretty well 
Really though 2nd winds is super legit and they are solid about the scene as well as carrying smoking deals. I used to always try and shop the crap out of the internet but 2nd wind really is competitive with the internet prices and at some point you end up way better going the local route getting good advice making sure that you buy the RIGHT stuff better than just some crap that you read an inflated review about. Wait a minute. Can I borrow those kneepads? |

well like I said I'm in a pretty rural area.
the closest kite shop is a ferry ride + 1 1/2 hour drive away from the spot I ride.
personally I think that could play to my advantage since there's lots of interest for kiting out here and only a handful of riders.

| Yes indeed 2nd wind is the real deal as is their crew. Unlike allot of stores that simply sell you what they have,they listen to your needs and point you towards what will meet them. Add that to all the stuff Pepi does for the kite comunity ... Pretty easy decision. |

yep I know this.
I actually had some friends that were semi pro and pro wakeboarders. for them it was kinda the opposite problem. they would get paid in gear but what they actually needed was a paycheck for there more then full-time wakeboarding job. |
Hate to break it to you guys but the riders that get free gear are actually being lent the kites, at the end of the year they have to give them back. The only way to get payed at all is to have constant media coverage in mags and shit, which is totally political. A few riders have salaries...a few, and they are the ones the larger kite companies use for their ads |
