i just ordered the carbon fiber double blade hook knife from here:
http://www.paragear.com/templates/base_template.asp?group=180
Now that I'm getting loved ones into the sport (wife, brother) makes sense to take that extra safety step. Got one for myself too. Just $12 if you don't order a 'pouch'. not bad for double blades and carbon fiber so it won't flex.
thanks to Nak for pointing out the benefits of the double-blade set up, otherwise I would have bought the cheaper knife, I'm sure.
the results are here:
http://www.nwkite.com/forums/t-9690-0.html
pretty compelling data.
also--you could end up saving someone else.

Very Happy

Where do you keep your knife if you do not have a sheath. I have a Captain Hook knife and the sheath is inadequate for kiteboarding in my opinion. You need two hands if you want to remove it quickly.

Kyle,
Here is an option made by Gerber (an Oregon company). These are being sold by this surplus company that I deal with called CountyComm ( http://www.countycomm.com )

These folks carry high end gear at GREAT prices. And NO I dont work for them. I have used many of their products on medical aid missions overseas where shit just cant fail.

This one has spare blade in handle and is CRAZY sharp. The angle of pull looks to be more straight than the Capt. Hook or Carbon.

Its also cheaper. only $ 8.95 !! http://www.countycomm.com/cutter.htm

Feel somewhat vindicated for not being a total dork as I carry two of these exact knives on me when I kite. These are super cheap, lightweight and effective. I keep one right on my chest attached to my life or impact vest (another benefit to wearing these) and one in the back of my harness where the cheapee ones go. I have affixed a little line with a big stopper ball on the one in the back of my harness so that I can feel for it easily. One good tip for knives - stick one in your teeth whenever you are self-rescuing or doing dicey maneuvers in the water with a powerable kite. It's a reminder and it's right there if you need it. Be safe.

And if you wear a 2008 Mystic Warrior you'll note there's no place to store your kite knife. I tried stitching the kite knife sheath onto the harness, but like Salmonslayer stated, it takes 2 hands to retrieve it in an emergency. Anyone offering a solution?

Wierd, my Mystic Warrier seat harness has a pocket in the rear, where this hook knife fits perfectly. Either way, the hook knife in the rear of the harness should not be your only hook knife as this setup is virtually worthless in an emergency. I just keep my second one there and use it when I am self-rescuing, etc. One of the benies of wearing a life jacket or impact vest is that you can put the hook knife right there on your chest for easy access in an emergency.
