Yeah it would be interesting to see how many people called it quits at viento, had to self rescue, or just flat out had a yardsale.

We had 96 people start the race, we lost 1 at Stevenson so we had 95 leaving Stevenson.

Yah, very impressive riding G-Man. Thumb's Up I heard Amery ran with one (front) strap?? It was tough to tell as Amery (and SS Dano) came by sooo fast after their late start... Shocked

I rode the 149cm SS Fuse mutant and 17m '07 Fuel. The Fuse worked really well, especially staying contacted to my feet as I lofted my way through the Hatch/Swell…. Rolling Eyes Needless to say, I was just a tad bit overpowered on the 17m the last third of the race. Started riding more conservative as I become more and more overpowered. Had to tack off and/or just wait for clear shot through the windsurfers. I knew if I made on mistake I could easily mow down a couple windsurfers or get into another kiter...

Here's a few from SL8r's car seat mounted long lense (thx to T-Ski for the support!)

Hey everyone I thought I would chime in on lessons learned:

1. We will do the start differently next time and see if it goes better. I am thinking about using your finish times from this year as a qualifier for your start group for next year. I don't think we need a competitive class and sportsman's class. I am thinking 4 groups of 25 riders. Each start group will have it's own timer at the finish line. It could be possible to start in the 3rd group and actually have a faster time than someone in the 1st start group.

2. Different color race jerseys for each start group. We will have numbers on the front. I would like to use lycra race vests like we did for the Gorge Games. We will have to have a good way to ensure we get these back. Some of you didn't claim your driver's license and I had to track you down, so I am not sure if we can count on getting the race jersey back. Any ideas here? Maybe we could get a sponsor for these....

3. mob control at the finish line will be a tough one.

4. You can wear a watch. Attach it to your gear. Wear an impact vest with a pocket and keep your watch in there. That way you will have some idea what your finish time was.

Thanks competitors! I think you all did a great job!

We are going to improve this event, so please bear with us as we learn.

Steve

Here is what I learned for next year from launching 60+ kites in under and hour:

We will still need to wrap bars up, but do not wrap them so far that the bar is underneath the kite, this is what created all the tangled messes that held everything up.

Wrap it up so that your kite is in the lineup, and your bar is laying on the river side of your kite, just outside the left wingtip. This way your bar will not accidentally get passed between your lines, and it will be easier to pick out of the stack and begin unwinding.

Spike did learn how to do the toss the bar through the center lines trick pretty well by the end of the day.

Many groups would make the start easier but from a ski support perspective its a lot harder to support multiple groups. We were probably an hour behind the first group on the ski's, so they really didn't get any support. At some point I realized this and sped ahead to try to see if there was anyone having trouble around wind mountain but that left me and Pat without the support of another ski (which is scary if your ski dies.)

Pat really kicked ass by being the traling ski, heard he picked up quite a few people.

We'll probably need to stress the point even more next year that it is a 2 hour event, not a 4 hour downwinder. If you want to do that you might as well just do it on your own because we can't be out there supporting a 20 mile stretch of river for that long.

Anyway it was a lot of fun and huge props to JP, Steve F., and the rest that made the event possible.

i weigh a buck fifty and rode an 11 rev and the fuse. felt i needed either more board or more kite at the beginning. hated watching everyone just leaving me early and the tight pack of kites kept me from working my kite to build speed. every time i tried to change tacks the lack of wind killed speed and momentum in the kite. finally began finding more wind towards home valley, allowing me to generate kite power and board speed. consistency worked as i noted some guys go down around and in front of me. found the windier slots of the river that put me on faster tracks than some of the other guys. mid race i still felt i could see most of the competitors in front of me. started really pushing to max out speed and try to gain ground. eventually this nice comfortable period of the race disappeared as the winds ramped up between viento and swell city and and i reached the limits of my depower (at least i think the limits, need to review rev depower limits if anyone has thoughts on this). throughout the last half of the race my front strap seemed to stretch and i fought to keep my foot anchored in the strap as a went over each swell. my waist harness repeatedly rose up to my chest and higher and i would find creative ways to pull it back down even as i was fully lit and had the kite at neutral. lost much speed at this point and was passed by a few at the end trying to keep board attached and harness from choking me. finally gave up on racing and focused on survival and just finishing. makes me wonder that if i had actually tried to hold a 13m down instead of an 11m would i have been just another part of the carnage through the hatchery corridor? i was just thankful that i kept my board on my feet. thanks to wally for lending me the 11m (i only have a 9m and 13m) and gman for his spare bar. overall a great experience. can't wait until next year.

i held the 13m Rev down and i have been weighing in @ 155 lbs lately. Had the 6'2" SST with straps, worked really well. i think a bit narrower of a surfboard would have worked better, as the wide board did throw me around a lot when i would carve into the side of the swell at high speed. man i had a couple of times when i was just skipping across the water, angling my board up to keep it from getting ripped off my feet, just hoping to get the kite a at 12 and overhead so i could slow down just enough to gain control and stand back up.

i saw Jims carnage just above swell city; it was gnarly. i couldn't do anything to help as i was little overpowered. i saw it shortly after he detached from his kite, i think, because all i could see was a kite (the LF M80) just blowing downwind, bar & lines flailing behind it.

this year i learned not crashing your kite and/or not falling off your board is more important than just plain going fast. I also learned that tacking back and forth along the water for ~40 minutes while waiting for everyone else (except 1 other person got out in front of me) was NOT BAD AT ALL. it was actually kind of fun watching all the kites get launched and counting more and more kites every time. you just have to keep your eye out for the boat. being out there before the start, even if you have to wait an hour!) is better than not being on the water when the start happens, IMO.

seriously tho, a great job to twin-fin and all the vols. and great job to everyone who made it through.

I had a rough time on my Jimmy Lewis 133 and 12m Rhino-- way too overpowered for the 5 miles above Swell. Not possible to depower the kite anywhere near enough and felt like I was standing on marbles at warp speeds. So I fell in lots and came in at about 2:47, I think. The timekeepers gave up on me, evidently. I almost gave up on me. But, anyway, my GPS says I did it, and here's how the track got plotted below.
