..THE BEST INVESTMENT IS WITHIN YOURSELF .. (THAT IS A QUOTE STAIGHT FROM WARREN BUFFETT'S MOUTH). IT IS NOT ABOUT GREED....(WHAT YOU GIVE IS WHAT YOU GET )THAT IS STAIGHT FROM THE TROLL HOW'S THAT JIM (IS THAT NOT YOUR NAME) .MY SUGGESTION IS THAT YOU DON'T CLOSE A DOOR THAT MIGHT BE PROSPEROUS TO YOU ...MY POST WAS ABOUT JUST HELPING SOMEONE EVEN IF IT'S ONLY FOR 2 MINUTES... THE APPRIECATION THAT YOU WILL GET FROM THAT PERSON THE NEXT TIME YOU SEE THEM WILL MOST LIKEY BE A GREETING OR EVEN A OFFERING OF A BEER ...YOU MIGHT NEED HIS HELP SOMETIME TROLL
Troll,
I understand the meaning of your quote. I also understand how it can be taken out of context. Just like Stringy's post. He has no previous knowledge or context about this individual. I am fairly certain my actions speak for themselves as far as helping out others, and yes I have also received help from time to time.

So, I didn't read in the topic post, that this person/noob was experienced in other sports which crossed over to kiting. It was mentioned that they had never been in the water, but had been on the land quite a bit. Granted if he felt really really comfortable on the land flying the kite, and he understood the wind window, etc., and knew how to self rescue, then an experienced kiter may have been able to give him some tips. But, at the same time, that person is then taking the responsibility for that kiter they are "giving tips to", and some may not want that responsibility especially if they don't know personally know the person.
In my case, I have told many people to go get lessons and I direct them where to do so in the Gorge. I'll keep that coast one in mind if ever I go kiting at the coast again. I'm no where near good enough to give tips/lessons to people. Within our group of friends we all help each other out, give tips, provide feedback on how to improve things, etc.... But we all know each other!
Giving lessons to someone is a whole other can of worms. If it's something simple, then maybe that's fine to give a tip, but something like getting into the water the first time and then re-launching etc., especially in the ocean, the person should take a lesson. You would need to stay there with that person as well.
I also took a little bit o of offense when Troll stated some of us have our "clicks" and care about ourselves only. Not to get on a soapbox or anything, but in our group (we are not a click), Nic and I and others from our group have used our own skis and gas and time to rescue many many people over the past couple of years. Good deal noobs and others experienced. We are always out to help, and even on the water many of times, I've tried to assist people, and if I can't I'll drop my kite, get the ski and get a board floating, get a kite floating and get people. So, not all groups of friends are out for themselves.
But, some people should not be out there without a lesson, and I tell them that when I pick them up. Especially when they don't know how to self rescue. |

Hey Andrew,
It was good fun riding with you and your brother yesterday, Lori and I had a great time.
Big props to the Dana and Brady downwinder Pro-motion service!
That was a real tasty stretch of waves!
As far as the noob, I woulda' just put the fear of god in him and told him he would get eaten by the guy in the gray suit without taking proper lessons |

Stringer, the decision you made was fine. But dont assume your not in the postition of being an instructor either. If you are riding the coast strappless and have been kiting with confidence for some time, you are as qualified as any to give sound advice. If I was faced with the same decision, I would be willing to show him what to absolutely avoid doing and what he should do if faced with an emergency. Not alot to say really and it could be enough to save him from making a critical mistake. I teach anyone who is willing to learn and Ive taught on my own gear from land lessons to letting em go downwind while I chase em on foot. Its all up to you. Your character determines wether or not you will be active in the growth of a noobie or if youll be waiting for him out on the waves...just make sure you rescue a board from time to time, keep an eye on a down kite, and pat the back of the new guy/gal who continues to live another day with heavy hands and remarkable wipe-outs. _________________ Mental attitude is more important than mental capacity |
