Tatiana and I went to Jones today - looking for some light wind action (her choice - not mine).

We were the only kiters - lots of ATVs and motorcycles. The off-roaders were coming dangerously close to our gear. When we weren't using our kites - we would stash all our stuff behind a log and roll up our lines.

Then the wind picked up and Tatiana was launching me and I was standing in the water trying to get in the right place when two ATV's come bombing down the beach - one was to the outside of Tatiana and one was headed straight for the middle of us - between my lines. I tried yelling and waiving, but to no help - my lines were tight - so they were in the air. At the last second I ran forward cus I didn't want to decapitate this guy on the ATV. He went right through my lines. My kite went rolling down the beach - doing summersaults. Fortunately no one was hurt. My kite turned out OK - but one of my lines got cut in half Confused all in all - it didn't turn out all that bad (it could have been much worse) - I even have an extra bar I used so I still got to kite.

The guy was very apologetic - but wasn't willing to cough up any cash to pay for my torn lines.

I'm posting this not because I'm upset or need to vent or anything like that. Its just a warning. When there are a bunch of us out on the water it seems like the off-roaders stay away for the most part, but when there are only a couple of kiters they coming zipping by our gear and eventually went through our lines. I really don't know how I could have avoided the situation - if these ATV guys do not understand kiteboarding and that our kites are attached to lines we have to be very much aware of what is going on. Tatiana was holding a bright green kite ready to launch on one end - and I was on the other end with my bright green go jo and red vest - but the guy was oblivious.

There is definately truth to the statement - strength in numbers. I'm not sure if i want to go back when there are only two of us.

Just a heads up to everyone else who kites at Jones.

Oh and by the way - anyone have an extra set of 07 waroo lines they want to sell? Very Happy

Bummer Martin.
and to think they get all mad when we kite through their fishing lines...
These two activities clearly don't mix well.

Did you at least knock him off his redneck mobile?

Holy crap ! I've thought about that almost every time I've riden there - and had envisioned the outcome much worse. Glad to hear the only thing severed was a kite line ...

I always worry about something like that too.... I am glad no one got hurt.

Did you have a car out there with you or did you just walk out? Seems like a car out on the sand helps keep the quads a way a bit.

You would hope so, but this is not a case. I had someone trying to run between a kite and a car, while I was self launching last year. Fortunately I wasn't hooked in yet, and managed to ran in front of him and stopped him right at the lines.

Basic Kite Release Situation.
Everybody needs to cover/deploy thier quick release in a situation were you have no control of the kite and or the situation.
This is the quickest way to minimize personal injury.

I have always thought that this is one of the issues w/ Jones and in a way SI (minus the ATV's). In the gorge people pretty much know how to react to kites, at Jones & SI I think that you have to believe no one even knows what it is called or all about. At Jones, the ATV'ers are always pretty curious, and though I hate to talk shit, seem like they may have either an extra or corrupt chromosome pool. Beware!

Sorry you had the incident dude. Glad all was well minus the line.

- Nah, nothing happened to the guy or his quad - he was just shaken up a bit - as we all were.

Definately happy that it all turned out OK for the most part, and still stoked I was able to ride that day.

- Next time I see those guys running around the beach I am going to set a trap for them Twisted Evil I'll have Tatiana hide behind a truck and I'll hide under the water - Navy Seal style, and then when they come, BAM!! I'll launch my kite as they come cruising by. Buwuhahaha!!!

We didn't have a car out there. We have a small sedan that we parked near the road. We tried driving it up to the edge of the beach but ended up getting stuck and had to push it out. A car would have helped block some of the traffic cruising by our gear.

Yeah, agreed, if I would have thought a little faster I may have been able to release the kite. i just thought the guy would see us and go around.

Sorry to hear about the ATV morons. Keep in mind that 4th of July weekend brings the characters out of hiding. I saw more ridiculously jacked up trucks on the drive to Portland from HR yesterday evening than I've ever seen before. Hopefully the rest of summer will be a bit more mellow at Jones.

I think Gene's right about the 4th... Sorry you had to deal with the trash Martin. as far as your line, you could splice up a new one to match the others. (Not Q-line.) If you need some help with that, let me know. Making one new line is a lot cheaper than a new set! Very Happy On the other hand, if your lines show any wear, it's time for a new set...

I here you martin....Those ATV's are soon gonna see the pissed-off side of me.....
I don't care what people say about being polite and all that nice shit....Those knuckle heads have a machine they can easily control 99 to 100% of the time...What really gets me pissed off is the endless amount of space those ass-whipes have beyond the dunes - away from the river bank. Why cann't they ride over there. Why do they have to ride along the bank......Honestly, we don't require much space to rig up....A little patch of beach would be nice....So the next time one of those riders comes speeding through anywhere near my lines, those Fu** are gonna get it....I'm not kidding.... Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad
It's only a matter of time before someone really gets hurt....
Here's a pic of one of them.....
The chubby in the black shirt came a little too close for comfort a couple of times....One more time, and I would have really said something to him....

Glad to hear that you and your wife were ok. It seems like it could have been really much worse.
