Does anyone know what Caution is doing with the kites? Converting them into another product or hauling them to the dump?

I think they are using the material in their new kites.

Just kidding, how funny would that be though, your new kite is a mish mash of old fabric.

I asked this question of Caution and recieved this response from Poul Sciebel;

Poul wrote:
... As Jeff said, the kites are being used for all sorts of bags, grocery bags, beach bags and so on. They are also in the process of coming up with other ideas, the options are endless. The person that is heading this whole deal up, is a local kitesurfer, that works with, and employs the mentally handicapped.

Of course, we are looking at selling product, after all that is our business. But if we can help out the industries, and the environment (no matter how small) in the process, then great.

Other brands may not want to believe it, but we are helping out the whole market. By getting old kites off EBay, Craig's List and so on, we are getting more people to go back to the retailers. Yes, we make the original sale to that individual, but a potential buyer of his/her used kite, will now have to go else where.

The safety issue is also a big deal to us, as we have been concentrating greatly on the safety aspect of kiting. Removing obsolete safety systems is a big plus in my eyes!

In the end, it gives more people a chance to get into the sport, at a better price, while staying safer.
...

I had considered the safety aspect, but had not really considered the boost to retailer by getting the old kites out of the market. It seems like wins all around by getting the gear off the market that the newbs are likely to buy before they know better, for the industry by getting new safer gear on the water, and for those of us with old kites to get a payback for them and know they are going to a good use. I sent Caution the 2003 Naish and Airush kites I first bought off of e-bay. I never even flew them so they were basically my first kiting waste of money. It was cool to get $300 bucks credit for each of them, basically I recovered what I spent on them and now I am diggin my new Mayhems.

Are there any local NW schools or Non-profits that could use the material from kites for artistic or practical purposes?

Perhaps some crafty teacher could use them to have the kids make trendy/hip re-useable grocery bags for there parents or as a fund raiser?

Perhaps Whitey respects these guys because of the Karma?

The more I fly other kites the more I appreciate my Mayhems! These kites are sweet!

Does anyone have any extra old inflatable kites they would sell super cheap to someone whom wants to take advantage of this oppurtunity but does not have an old kite?

Want to try before you buy? Contact me and I'll set you up with a test flight on one of my kites (7M or 11M) or contact Jim and New Wind ( www.newwindkiteboarding.com ). I'll be in Hood River this weekend for KB4C and in I expect to be at the coast the following weekend (wind permiting), and if Sauvie puts out I am close by.

The Caution Going Green Kite Recycling and Reuse program ends this month. This is a great oppurtunity to get a deal on a great kite, and clean out some of the old equipment.
