I just smuggle it like a drug mule. That way I don't get harassed at the counter and there's no extra fees. Worth the trade-off I think. Kinda like those "IT" machines from South Park.

I flew on United on Monday and they are now charging for 2nd checked luggage.
I argued that I was not charged at Sea Tac on the way down and they said it was now a policy to charge on 2nd checked item, regardless of what it was.
In my case it was for the deciever bag. At least the charge was minimal at $25.00.

To be clear, it's not a merger, it is only a partnership. You will begin to see both airlines sharing flight codes and Continental has agreed to join the United Star Alliance of airlines (sharing of airport lounges, flights flown on one airline can have the miles assigned to the other, a few administrative things, etc.). Do not expect baggage allowances or other fees to change for either airline as a result of the partnership per se. Do expect fees to increase for all airlines as a result of increasing costs.

On a related note, flights on Alaska after July 1 will now be charging $25 per bag per person after the 1st bag. Charges for oversize (like golf bags) will remain $75.
