Well the guy lived so can we make fun of him? Had 911 on the line and the sheriff boat about to launch...

The whole time he's sitting up on an island in the ponds. Kind of weird.

Wearing a bike helmet and flying a 9m when everybody is lit on 5's. Trevor spotted his wife using his inflated kite as a nice cushion on the rocks. They had a really nice Acura MDX.

Anyway glad the kook survived to be a kook another day.

Sorry to hear about that - I was wondering why you were asking about a best bar - didn't even know you had any best kites - well after today I guess you don't - that sucks man Mad

Had the opportunity to view said Dufus in his upwind environment on the island opposite The Wall. Holmes was taking crushtanic beatings once he decided to attempt to leave Giligan's Island.
The Wall pole smurfing community treated him as a leper; leaving him to flounder and learn wind life lessons by himself.

Maybe a good kite for those conditions would be a 4M PSYCHO 3 foil? I think that's what Sebastian Bubmann flew in the Triple S comp. No bladder to pop Very Happy

He took off kiting, but no one really saw exactly where he went. About 2 hours later, his wife asked us if we'd seen him. No one had (except for Tom - earlier on in the day), so Robin took his boat up to the Maryhill bridge. After searching around for quite a while, there was still no sign of him. By then his wife was a little worried...

The "rest of the story"

I take my boat out to fetch him based on the news that he is near the ponds. I find him dragging himself downwind about 1/2 mph near the far end of the ponds.

I assumed he would be happy to see me but when I asked him to dump his kite so I can take him back to his frantic wife he said that we was making "good progress" dragging back. Thinking I just saved myself the hassle of not having to roll up his kite etc. I realized that if I did not return with him, his wife would have a nervous breakdown since it would probably take him 2 hours to drag back at his current pace.

I idle slowly for about 5 minutes watching his painful progress.

After a bit of negotiation I told him that I needed to take him in. The reason he did not want to drop the kite was because he said that the kite would "power up and fly funny" when he tried to fly it "low" because he thought the lines where set on the wrong knot or something.

No surprise, when I coached him thru putting the kite in neutral on the water, the kite behaved totally normal. Talking with him on the boat he mentioned that he stopped on the beach a few times (this explains why I could not find him during the initial search). I still can't figure out how he relaunched his kite or why. He kept on insisting that his kite was rigged wrong saying that it would stall, jellyfish (my word), power up and throw him. hmmm. . . . sounds like too big a kite, 40 mph winds, and a beginner.

Good news is that he is safe, bad news is that I don't know if even today understands the peril he put himself into. Blaming the knot setting on the kite as the root cause of his reason for rescue seems a little nieve. I strongly suggested to him that the conditions are a not for a beginner kiters or for trying out untested/new gear (the reason he said he had it rigged wrong) regardless of ability. I hope he takes my advice for the future.

Good Citizen Award to Nibor Thumb's Up

Canoe paddle upside the head also works.

So TBR were you the lone kiter among the polesmurfers at the wall?

Way to go Robin.. once again no good deed goes un-punished (like being the sap who takes his boat to the beach just to rescue kooks all day.) If he didn't get you any beer then I will.

I wish I could have been the one to explain to him that a 9m in those winds was a poor idea, much like the bike helmet and downwind body drag. Maybe I should have just told his wife.

Anyway, thanks for saving him and the follow up story. Thumb's Up

Robin thanks for going out of your way to help that guy

We were watching from the road and we kept saying what is that dude doing just land the kite and get in the damn boat already. I kind of figured he was too scared to land it. I feel really bad for his wife she was freaked out.

Sooooo, I wonder why he chose Rufus and not das Spit to engage in kookery? I'm scared shitless of riding out there until it calms down a little bit.
