I saw this on posting on ikitesurf and figured it was worth passing along. A guy from the Natl Forest talks about snowkiting access on St. Helens.

Sweet, thanks for the info! I've never done it, so I have no idea, but how long does it take to get to St. Helens from Portland? Definately wanna get some snowkiting in over winter break! Very Happy

I was up at meadows the other day and on the lift with some kiteboarders, they said they go up there quite a bit but always use snowmobile to access the kite area. Sounds like either snowmobile, snowshoe, or skin in are the options... [/i]

Its about 6-8 miles from the parking lot to the Lahar. Snowmobile is the easy way to go. In fact, if you have access to a snowmobile, going to the Plains is where you want to go. Its a huge open valley that always seems windy. Its an extra 6 miles and over some hills. It would help if you had some snowmobile experience as it can be a exciting ride to get to the plains.

I was up riding last sunday. There is about 2-3 feet of base depending where you are. We still need a week or two of good snow before you can play on the lahar. Its very rocky and full of gullies.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for the details Mark, sounds like a snowmobiler only affair... 8 miles would be hell on snowshoes... maybe some of my buds that have tele gear can get me out there.
