Well I didn't have any problem tacking back upwind after a few days (slight background in windsurfing helps )
Mostly I think I'm gonna get geared up and head out for a day and just play it by feel. Get the kite out, fly it on the beach, if I feel like I have it under control, I'll hit the water, if not, I'll probably pack it up and re-evaluate gear & location. |

Okay, but make sure when you are trying to feel out on the beach whether or not you have control of the kite that there is nobody downwind of you.
Also, SPI is quite mellow compared to the Gorge. Your 9m might be too much or too little kite depending on the day, and heading out into the middle of the Columbia isn't like the waist deep water at SPI. Make sure you know how to self rescue.
Again I'd recommend Sauvies, the coast or Jones Beach before the Gorge. I just think you will likely get a lot more out of your first few NW sessions if you plan on going downwind. |

Don't count on it! Most likely will cause over confidence and accelerate your need to Self Rescue.
Dragging kite gear out of the water over at Bozo Beach is magnitudes more difficult than windsurfing gear.
Having a plan before needing a plan typically is a good idea.

Most injuries occur on land. In the gorge, it is very gusty and hanging out with a 9m over head on the beach is not advised.
The gorge is very intimidating when there are a 100 kites in the air and you have to kite in a very tight area with other kiters.
Try the ocean. It is a way better place to learn.
My personal experience. Charge it hard! |

I agree, you should probably head to the ocean or sauvies on a windy day. The newbs at sauvie typically hang out way upwind of everyone else. If your still feeling out the kite, sounds like you have a day of body draggin ahead of you in order to learn how to drag upwind in a hurry, relaunch your kite in a number of different positions (principally while NOT standing on the bottom).
Then go ahead and charge it. Don't rush it. By having all the required skills down you will become more confident and comfortable..and that is when you really learn quickly out on the water. _________________ Bury me standing cause I won't lay down!!
