I know from last year that a lot of people head out to stevenson and hood river from PDX after work during the week. and farther (Lyle, Rufus) during the weekends Is there any way we could set up a carpool coordination effort on NWkite.com? that would save everybody lots of $. I alone spent over a grand on gas last summer.

Hope everybody is open to the idea

This site is actually really good. If you all log a destination and schedule in it will match you with other people. I recommend everyone do this thats interested in carpooling and saving the planet.

Spike, you read my mind brother! I think it would be cool to post meeting times for Stevenson and Sauvie trips.

I know that you can park cars at the troutdale truck stops without any worry. There is also lots of parking available at the business parks on highway 30, before you reach mcdonalds on the way out to Sauvie.

Gas in vancouver is $3.58/gallon Surprised

That site needs to be rebuilt, the interface is fugly! Very Happy

Spike - just need to find a few bros that got your schedule and share your route. I'd suggest too there's a big Wal-Mart in Troutdale that's good for dropping a car.

If you are planning on kiting all weekend, you might split a room with somebody at a motel. Or camp out at Tucker park in HR. With gas prices what they are, it will definitely pencil out.

Tucker Park - thats where everyone goes with their vans? Are there places set up for tents?

The place fills up pretty fast, especially on holiday weekends. I'd get there early. Beautiful campground though, and just about 10 minutes from HR.

How's the rush hour traffic from downtown pdx to the gorge? Are there any good rules to follow: like, leave before 4pm? Can you leave at 4:30?
I have a job downtown now, and I'm nervous about leaving at 5 and sitting in traffic, I'm wondering how early I'd need to leave to avoid traffic...
I could be down to carpool.
For those trying to aviod the high gas prices: my friend and I are manufacturing and selling budget veg-oil conversion kits for diesels: http://www.poweredbyveg.com.
We can do conversions, too.

The Banfield (hwy84) is Tuff. It seems to start around 4 and is fully clogged by 4:30. Hope that helps.

Its tough to avoid the crunch from DT. The 84 bottleneck seems the worst between I-5 and 82nd ave. You really want to be in the car before 4 or find a way to head eat on arterials (columbia blvd or powell) and then jump on 84.

If you are leaving from downtown, you can use Sandy to bypass the worst part of I84... if you are "creative" about how you get from Sandy to I84 you can bypass a lot of stop lights.

If you have a flexible schedule getting to work early so you can leave early is the best bet. I84 will get progressively worse from 3pm on.

The good news is no matter how bad it is on 84, it all clears up once you get past 205. 70mph+ no problem Very Happy

Hmm wonder how many 24/7 gorge locals are reading this and thinking: poor saps Wink

Spike - excellent idea. I would definitely be interested in carpooling and don't mind driving - it would be nice to have someone shoot the shit with to kill the windshield time.

Glad to hear many of you are open to the idea. I'll be back up in Portland starting March 31st, probably be living in NE Beaverton. I'll be working in St. Johns and will hopefully be able to leave there around 3:30 or 4:00 everyday and drive out along marine drive until Troutdale, which as suggested earlier would be a good carpool meet-up location.

Anybody have any info on when and how busy eastbound marine drive gets in the afternoons?
