When a wind gust catches a kite, do you ride it out or let go? There was a kiter who recently got slammed after he was lifted 30ft. That has got to hurt.

I'm not sure you'll get an honest answer with a unicorn and rainbow avatar

BlowMeAKiss, when you jump you hold the bar in as you are in the air (powering the kite up) and it creates lift to hold you up longer. If you push the bar away from you it depowers the kite thus dropping you out of the sky. Glad to see a new face in the sport. Any questions that you need answered feel free to PM me and I will help you. Seem's like everyone wants to be a comedian for some reason instead of reaching out to help someone new in the sport. Rolling Eyes Next time you see me, hit me up and I will be more than happy to explain and answer questions. Very Happy

I suppose if you feel you're higher than you want to be you should sheet out... but if you want to go high, don't. You have to ready for the landing tho.
I think the "second lift" tends to happen in gusty overpowered situations - so be careful of your jumps if it's fluky.

I don't know exactly how I have been lifted - but maybe like twenty feet or so - and I got slammed pretty hard - yeah it hurts, but nothing got broke and I was able to ride the rest of the day and then the next day - I was sore, but nothing too bad.

If you take a jump and then catch a gust - you are going to get higher than anticipated, most people actually enjoy it and try and ride it out. Others will sheet out (push the bar away from your stumach, which depowers the kite) and then they come down faster - hopefully not too fast to the point where they crash.

But anyways, on really windy days, people will regularly catch 30 feet or more of air on purpose and land just fine.

The 50ft barrier has been broken and with todays kite technology, it is real easy for people to go 25 to 30 ft on a good windy day.

HAHAHA Awesome!! Laughing

As for jumping...
If you get lifted higher than you'd like, let the power out of the kite (not all the way cause you'll come down too hard) and keep the kite overhead, as your about to hit the water down bring the kite to the side to make sure it doesn't "Hindenburg" as soon as you hit the water. My thoery is that whatever you do, the worst thing you can do when you get lifted 30+ feet is to let all the power out of the kite, or even worse, ditch it, this leads to really hard landings. I believe there was a guy on Lake Washington this fall who got picked up in a 60 knot gust and when he came down hard he got knocked unconscious and drowned... If it's really gusty make sure you have the skill to deal with that kind of weather. some times its better to just sit it out. Be careful.

Rotor is the worst. Look out for mechanical turbulence if you are jumping! It'll slam you down just as hard as it boosts you up.

A friend of mine got the most air I've ever seen from a single jump: a life-flight helicopter ride from Pacific City to Emanuel hospital in Portland.

He was kiting in strong turbulent northwest wind on the *south* side of Cape Kiwanda. He got lifted pretty good and then slammed down like a rag doll onto the hard-packed wet sand. He was unconscious and in the middle of doing some pretty freaky convulsions by the time I got to him.

If the air seems messed up (gusty) and you are getting "double jumps" I'd bet you are flying in rotor. Stay out of rotor and stay safe!

Spike, I was there the day we lost Dan Bergan. A true sailor... I will miss him. The story does get told again and again thus being distorted along the way. It was gusting almost 60mph. It wasnt the heighth that got him...

B.M.A.K. Be sure to take some good lessons. Get into the basic fundamentals and be like a gun slinger.
