Well, it was only windy enough at Beverly to fly the kites for 5 minutes, but we got some pictures! Very Happy
Best part of the day was the camp showers - hot enough to burn you!

HA!!, the 16m was great (while the wind lasted). Surprisingly more maneuverable than I had expected it to be!
And look at it pulling me upwind, thats at least 45°!

I need to get used to the "some power or all power" aspect of the C-kites, I'm still used to the 100% de-power of bows.

At least we got the foils, land board, and kites and gear all sandy and wet. We tried body surfing but nearly got swept out to sea with the intense rip currents Shocked! Spent the rest of the day cleaning and drying everything as usual. The hot showers are almost worth the crappy wind at Beverly beach... almost

Sounds like a Coast Guard rescue in the making.

Spike- If I am seeing right that Rhino is an 07 which makes it an SLE kite not a "C". The kite should have just as much depower as your typical bow kite. Enjoy

I do not plan on staing out of the ocean. I've had plenty of great sessions on the coast. Getting to know the wind was the idea there, the concusion is that south wind and big waves are not ideal at Beverly Beach, hence the kook-like behaviour. It was still more fun than making fun of others from up on a cliff in the rain though

Its all good until something goes wrong and you find yourself being swept up to Cape Foulweather amongst the 15-foot whitewash. Seriously, take the ocean seriously, because it doesn't have much mercy during winter storm conditions. In 20+ years of surfing, windsurfing, and kiteboarding on the Oregon coast I've seen my share of Coast Guard rescues and we've had plenty of drownings of newcomers to ocean sports.

Hi Guys,

I've only ever really kited on the Columbia with success. I'm used to strong easterly winds and having to edge like crazy and pull the kite to the edge of the window. Any advice for someone who is new to kiting at the beach looking to make some coastal runs? (Apart from making sure it is a relatively onshore wind).

How do you spot a rip current? It seems like the only that I see them is when I am in them and it is too late...

Anyone have some good resources for learning out places at the beach? I'm planning on a Lincoln City trip the 28th-30th.

Thanks!

maybe wait till spring/summer to figure it out - things can get out of hand pretty quick this time of year - if you are dead set, stay in close for sure.

why are these guys kooks exactly? looks to me like they are staying close in.

i've seen lots of veterans put their kite into a wave on occasion - that's what makes you a kook??

danger everywhere in this life. i'm guessing spike, reaper etc. were safer riding then driving the two lane roads back from the coast.

I guess I am missing your point also, Why are they giving kiteboarding a bad name??? I can see your point if they go whale watching but on the inside??? Looks like a blast to me. Laughing

Looks like to me they were on a deserted beach playing around in shallow water. I don't see any problem with that.

If you see something that looks like a river with small rapids it is probably a rip. I've never experienced it, but in one of the Hawaii posts someone talks about a rip that is very wide and that you cannot really see. Every rip I've been in is very visible and you feel like a dumbass when you get out of it and look at how obvious it was.

It might be a bit off-shore judging from a couple of the photos, also something that's good to look out for.

Overall I can't blame you too much. Let he who has not kooked out cast the first stone.

But seriously, respect the ocean. Pretty big body of water last time I checked.
