i will add my respect to my brothers and sisters who have faced the Beast and come out of it more of less whole.
mexico has a napolean code of law, which is very different than our own. in mexico, you are guilty until proven innocient. what often happens to gringos is that everyone is thrown in jail until things can be sorted out. very scary, mexican jails. and very expensive to get out of. if i have trouble down there and am given the opportunity, i am running for the border.
much is made today in los estados unidos regarding what some would term an open-minded approach to illegal immigration. some pols that lack spine have jumped on this bandwagon. call me a bigot if you like, but i favor a very tough approach to those who travel in this country illegally, no matter their country of origin.
mexico's problems begin with their "leaders." imagine if our current gang (or any past group) of scoundrels in washington was allowed to stay in power for 300 years! |

"Robert Fishman, director of administration for the Mainly Mozart Festival in San Diego, said he was robbed of more than $500 in cash by a group of Mexican police officers Oct. 13 after leaving a Caliente sports gaming site. He said the officers stopped him on a dark section of the pedestrian bridge that leads to the San Ysidro border crossing around 10 p.m. and searched his wallet and pockets. After they let him go, he realized the money was missing. "
.............................................
I have a similar story.
About 8 years ago I was in TJ with a group of friends. We crossed the border at about 3am. Went up the same dark pedestrian bridge. One of my buddies decided to take a wizz before crossing into America. Out of the side of a wall (semi hidden) a door opened and a federally jumped out. He grabbed my buddy and said he was going to jail. I went over and said it was all a misunderstanding. He then grabbed my jacket and said I was going to jail as well. All this while being able to see the bright lights of America. I again told him he was mistaken and flipped his hand off me. He then grabbed me with both hands and started to wrestle with me. I flipped him off my back and yelled RUN to my buddies. We all took off with the cop yelling ALTO ALTO and blowing in his whistle. We were running as fast as we could and jumped a small railing and ran thru the cars waiting to cross into America. Much to there delight. I could hear americans leaning out there windows yelling "you can do it" and " run faster".
Needless to say I was running as fast as I could. I was getting winded though. (too much booze and wearing flip flops) THe cop was gaining on me. Not sure how he could run so fast while stilling blowing his whistle! I thought I was going to have to stop short and clock him.
After running thru the last line of cars we came into a very well light hall with a US marine or Boarder patrol with a machine gun. He looked quite suprised to see all the commotion. He made everyone stop. He asked me what was going on. I said they were trying to extorte money from us for crossing this late. Meanwhile the mexican cop is PISSED. He is screaming that we must go back and go to jail. The Marine/boarder guard then asked me if we were all US citizens. I replied yes sir. He said Welcome Home!!! I couldn't help myself and looked back at the pissed cop. I said "I can come and I can go!" The Marine chuckled.

That's cool. I think it is important to realize that there are some very cool people in Baja and mexico in general. Just as there is white trash meth heads robbing and stealing here, there are the same genus of desperate souls elsewhere.
I have lived with people in the philipines that had literally next to nothing and they toiled day in and day out and always came home with a smile for a friend, even if that friend was some 25yo white guy with which that had nothing in common with.
If I lived in Baja and had a hard time feeding my family and I saw Americans coming and going with all their expensive shinny and all manner of unnecessary toys, I'm quite sure that the thought of stealing some of that stuff for myself would cross my mind.
Its kind of funny, but this thread has inspired me to go out and do something for those less fortunate than myself. I think that everyone on this forum has much to be thankful for. |

nice words brother. they are appreciated.
On the subject of driving to baja, I wanted to post a link to the baja guide on Iwindsurf for anyone that wants to get more information.
Mike Godsey, the LV wind forecaster, makes the trek every year and has some good information on how to do the drive and other useful information.

In Texas, you're allowed to shoot back. |
actually in texas they shoot first, w/out wasting time to talk.
basically, anytime you travel to a poorer country than the US, you have to move like the locals. at best you'll fascinate the natives w/ your looks and your gear; at worst you'll end up as a statistic. being lucky may mean getting back to tell your sketchy story. in lots of places across this planet your life doesn't mean shiot, but your goods are a years wages and your girl is an aryan trophy.
all in all, how many sketchy stories come out of baja? discount tj, b/c you're upping the stakes there, and there may be a 'power vacuum' affecting things. check the facts and know your chances before you go anywhere. when has mexico ever had a rep as a really safe place? don't be naiive. |

Guerrero Negro, I had a nice little incedent where I was run into. small little scratch. long story short, was asked for a 100 dollars and it would be OK, once again I was hit.
I being stupid thought NO, then the local Policia show upand I now have to agree to pay the 100 to the gentleman and then my nice 250 dollar fine at the Police Station.
Then to make things better, as I am getting my wallet to go get more money to pay my fines, I have my K-Bar, a knife I had from Iraq.
Now, I'm told I have a weapon (arms as it was called) in Mexico, and the force has grown to about 8 individuals and the cheif of police. And this is something you go to jail over. But it will be OK, which translated to "The Chief of Police will keep your weapon, and you may finally leave."
This ordeal took a good 4-5 hours and a lot of ....
Lesson: pay off who ever so you do not have to deal with the police.
Other Lessons to keep you out of trouble:
Go where there are americans, stay out of town unless you have too.
Have a good idea where you will be when the sun goes down.
Eyes out there see you even though you don't see them.
98% are good people, 2% are not, just don't let them know your there.
AND LAST AND MOST IMPORTANT
You are thought to have much more money than they do. Do everything to look like your poor. And be ready to buy your way out of any situation.
As I was told, in America, you pay an attorney and he gets you off. Here we eliminate the middle man.
I have no fear of the police here, police are corrupt in every country.
The ROAD and Driving on M1, now that's something to FEAR.
Now save some money and fly to La Paz and go to La Ventana or Los Barilles and have a good time.
Driving is definately not cheaper unless your here for a month at least, most likely two as a break even with all the damage you will do to your vehicle.
See yall on the water.
