I would be up for that to. I just thought that kiting on the willamette is rarely doable and very close to home. They were calling for gusts to 75mph on the coast. Maybe a little to much, maybe they're over estimating. Coast should fire with monster wind and monster waves......I'm all about that. I guess I'll wait and see what it's looking like tomorrow morning. Anybody off?

I walk by the river every day on my way to work, so its always real tempting. Might be worth a try down at Willamette Park

Then again you'd probably have better luck at Rooster, strong southerly winds in town usually mean westerlies there.

If you try Sauvies on a SW - take a look at the river a few miles South of the 'regular' launch. It looked do-able at the Reeder RV park/ grocery ( the first one on the way out ) - but the woman wouldn't let us launch. There is also a public access @ 1mi. further north of this spot that looked do-able on a SW. Basically, this is across the river from Frenchman's.

prior to reaching eugene, the willammette river has national wild and scenic designation... after that, we used to call it the swillamette in some of the classes i took in college. you don't even wanna know whats in it. dioxins, ddt, and lots of treated sewage are just the short list. rip it.

South/SW winds: I've always wondered if a downwinder from Broughton Beach--it is the sandy/rocky beach on the South shore of the Columbia right by the airport/Marine Dr.; just upriver of Salty's Restaurant) to Wintler Park and or Marine Park on the North shore of the Columbia up in Couvlanistan would work? Even better would be launching from the sandy West point of Lemon Island which is the closest island from Broughton beach. Granted this would take a boat and some logistics. . .but it looks like fun with all that butter.

Anyone ever try one of these launches Question

When we had south wind last week i went to Winkler to see what it looked like. South with a little bit of west in it and you could probably get off the beach heading east into the current. I'm probably going to give it a go. Certainly room to come in but you'd have to be careful to drop your kite early to avoid it ending up in the trees. If anyone wants to coordinate launching at Broughton and either doing a downwinder or at least having a backup car at Winkler i'd like to try that too. I don't think Marine park has any room to land except into the boat ramp. I've windsurfed from there on southerlies, it was very choppy on the North side of the river. Cottonwood beach in Washougal has lots of room, don't know how well southerlies get in there? All these spots are at least up stream of the Willamette! I've been told Kalama can be good on southerlies when the tide is coming in. I wonder if the south wind is steadier there than at Frenchmans Bar to make the drive worthwhile?

I scouted out Broughton, Winkler and Marine Park years ago about this time of yr when we all start jones'in. . .Winkler park has some wicked current to it and drop-offs right off shore, unlike the South shore/P-town side with all those island etc . . . It didn't seem too feasible for a launch either with S/SW wind, the lack of space and basically on-shore wind flow. Marine Park has much more beach to it and so I think it would be a more feasible launch with S/SW wind, but there are hidden pylons everywhere near shore in the water because it used be a WWII ship building yard and they would moor all types of vessels there. Lots of rocks and glass as well, but as you stated, at least it's upriver of the Willamette.

So was that a Keiser Shipyard? Always wondered.

Good info sasquatch, scratch my ideas for trying to launch at Winkler!!! I'll go and have another look at Marine Park as an alternate for coming in downwinding from Broughton. Fingers crossed it'll just blow West at Rooster

Yes indeed it was the old Keiser shipyard. If you go to Marine Park there are a # of informational signs at the boating ramp there. . . that tell the story of the shipyard and masses it employed. Keiser made a killing from all the gov't contacts (as do most gov't contractors) and later parleyed his fortunes in to what is now Keiser Permanente.

The entire reason to sail on south/SW wind in the Columbia is to avoid the CSO waters in the Willamette. Kelley point park has some "wicked awesome" current and is quite a hike, not to mention the car brake-in factor which is especially high there. Not saying it can't be done.

The only person I know with a boat, and I don't personally know him, is NAK.

I'd definately throw some gas $ and beer at him if he wanted so try out the west end of Lemon Island on a S/SW day.
