I jokingly made a suggestion to the Skamania County Port Manger that we need an air compressor installed at kitebeach in Stevenson and he surprised me by asking what kind.

So... any suggestions on size, type, and configuration for a low pressure high volume air compressor set up? Anything special about the pressure regulator? We may have to solicit donations for the compressor but I think the Port would do the install for us. Or they may buy the whole thing.

My vote would be to have a hose reel (or 2), at each end of the launch area with machine tucked safely away in the MFG building.

Sick! Stevenson is amazing in how it treats its kiters.

I use this one for all of my car shit which include air tools, and for spraying. Works pretty good. Charges to 140psi in a couple mins, and is enough to fill up several kites.

http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?cat=Compressors+%26+Air+Tools&pid=00916732000&vertical=TOOL&subcat=Air+Compressors+%26+Inflators&BV_UseBVCookie=Yes

They also make a horizontal version which is identical, just layed on its side.

Don't know about the regulator, though I doubt they'd make anything for what we want. Regulating 140psi to 10 max would probably take a while to fill the kite. Just gotta be careful, 'cause I'm sure someone would over-inflate/pop their kite sooner or later.

One like Adam posted would work for sure..probably overkill. A 15/20gal tank would be plenty at 100 psi to fill up eveyone's kite. You could put a vapor filter on it, as compressed air has moisture in it, but its not required.

You might want to call an air compressor or industrial machinery supplier and ask them. I have a 15 gallon compressor at home and a 13m kite will drop the pressure pretty quickly. If I am just blowing air in the shop then the thing is constantly running to catch up. This kind of use day in and day out will really wear it out quickly.

I would think that you would want either a big 50 gallon 2 stage deal or perhaps they make a low pressure, high volume compressor.

OK hear's your opportunity to jump on a post.........NO COMPRESSOR PLEASE!!! Don't want to hear it re-filling, noise is obnoxious and pumping up is the most aerobic exercise you'll get kiting......unless you gotta swim for it of course-bad enough we gotta listen to jet skis. Hats off to Stevenson for offering but I personally don't need or want it! Respectfully Steve B Shocked Very Happy Very Happy

Adden: if you could hide it in a building and it wasn't heard re-filling it might be tolerable.

That's the ticket. And you won't need a tank since it can run on demand.
I've got a small version set up in my car that works great but would take
a while for bigger kites. I guess you could run 2 or 3 in parallel. That would
offer some redundancy if one pump went out.

Air velocity out of a conventional compressor can damage valves/bladders.

I can spec out a system if someone wants to build it. Probably could sell
some to the schools/test centers, etc. I'd stick it in a nice sturdy noise proof
box for starters. Maybe with a coin slot where you could put in donations.

P.S. I kind of agree with Yardsale, though. I just see folks standing in line
around the compressor or dragging the hose all over other people's shit.
And then some night it would disappear and all would be well again.
