I didn't see it 'cause I was sitting out on the rock looking at the water, but I guess his kite (Fuel 9) lulled back while he was launching, then shot back forward pulling him towards the bank/big rocks. His heal took most of the hit so no one was sure if he broke it or what. The ambulance showed up a few mins later, but I don't know what happened... |

Get Well Mark
and
Get Well Portland Motorcycle Jeff
The same thing happened to Jeff 2 days ago getting pulled across the rocks with feeting out in front of him taking the rock impacts.
Both days had strong winds.
Both kiters are experienced at the launch area.
Water level is low.
I'm guessing they both launched standing on the rocks instead of getting braced in the water.
Be careful everyone. It may be safer to get a little further in the water. |

The only way you could really launch from below is if you had your kite down in the rocks (like Ben was doing with his students), or had 50m lines. It's the lowest I've ever seen! |

Wow! Bummer Mark.
Hope its not too bad, get well soon.
The only injuries that I suffered was that I severly brusied the bottom of both feet. It's been three days now and I starting to walk without a limp.
Planning on getting on the water Sunday/Monday.
BIG THANKS go out to Kramer and Alex for assisting me after my failed launch. You guy rule.
Again, the old wear a helmet thing comes into play. You just never know when shit is goint to hit the fan. Lucky for me I was wearing my helmet as I was Super-Manning it towards the BIG F*&#ing Rock (that was pulled out of the water last week) I was lucky not to hit it.
You guys are right about the low water level launching. Get out in the water and have the kite lauched from the gravel beach when these conditions exist......I call it the Chris Anderson launch those old school kats really do know whats going on. |

Awesome! I guess I should say dying is a relative term, if its blowing 7m then drops to 11m then I guess it has died a bit. Looking at the graphs though I'd say your absolutely right, looks really good until around 8. Hope it continues, maybe my observations are a bit dated (pre-wacky climate change)... guess you can't really say anything is a sure thing in the PacNW.
Love the Stevenson stoke! |
